Start screen pinning (Windows 8):

Note: This setting is only available for Start menu shortcuts and only affects setups that are run on Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012. As of Windows 8.1 and later, new application shortcuts are no longer pinned to the Windows Start Screen. Instead they're added to the Apps view. This decision by Microsoft was to let the user control what they want on their Start Screen given their preference instead of the decision being forced upon them by application developers.

This setting controls whether or not each selected shortcut will be pinned to the Windows 8 Start screen if it was created under the Start menu. Choose from the following options:

<<Use original values>>

Use the original setting for each of the files. This is the setting for each file prior to opening the multiple file properties dialog.

Default behavior

Use the default Windows behavior for each file's Start menu shortcut, based on the target file's type. In general all Start menu shortcuts that point to executables will be pinned to the Windows 8 Start screen by default.

Don't pin shortcut to start screen

Don't pin each selected file's Start menu shortcut to the Windows 8 Start screen. This allows you to remove any secondary pinned shortcuts.

Pin shortcut to start screen

Pin each selected file's Start menu shortcut to the Windows 8 Start screen. This option allows you to pin Start menu shortcuts that point to non-executables such as help files (however Microsoft discourages that).
