My Native Indian Flute sample...

Before listening to this small sample Native Indian Flute sample I did please bear in mind the following:

1) I have only been playing for about one (1) week (about five to six hours total)

2) My vibrato will scare you (ouch, I apologize up front)

3) There is huge fan noise (my systems have the side panels off) in the background

Finally, I play the same made up tune (first thing that came to my fingers) various ways to show some techniques I am working on until the song book gets here (dang media mail, grrr).

So, there is a standard, a upbeat, a fluttery, and a sad (note bending, or attempting too, ouch, sorry again ;-)) version all packed into this short sample file.

I know I have a long way to go... but this is fun. The flute was hand crafted by Odell Borg from http://www.highspirits.com/ for those wondering. I have the Sparrow Hawk "A" (higher pitched over all and thus is suppose to play well with other instruments... as it should carry over them better)

Oh, yes... I almost forgot I am using the Cedar wood version (and they have a Walnut).

I heard the Cedar is best in all seasons.

No such thing. Native flute is about the moment, nature, and how the two are interacting. Nothing in nature is ever without flaw, so unless you are trying to sound unnatural then you need flaws. Whatever you do, do not focus on "bad notes" or even notice them for that matter. Every second you spend thinking about a bad note is a second of lost work improving the good ones.

Nice, VERY nice. I especially like the bends you got in there. Your vibrato is just fine...about the right level for your flute. BTW... I was at the new Indian museum in DC this last weekend (First Nation museum to the folks up north). Your playing would have fit right in. It's a FANTASTIC museum... focuses on people rather than "things".

My roomate is a world class Tenor player, he used to tour with Dr. Hook during their heyday and has played with a long list of greats. We had a big surprise birthday party for Jimmy Payne (King Curtis' drummer for many a week or two back. Great jazz jam there, Brian Buchanan and Gib Monks.
