Post Dependency Module: Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6)

Dependency Module: Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6)
    Last Revision: October 13, 2004 (002)

NOTE: This module is installed with Setup Factory 7.0.1.0.

    Overview
Use the Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6) dependency module with Setup Factory 7.0 to detect and install runtime files required by Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6) applications.

    Background Information
All programs developed with Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 require a set of core run time files in order to run. These files include:
    • Asycfilt.dll 2.40.4275.1
    • Comcat.dll 4.71.1460.1
    • Msvbvm60.dll 6.0.97.82
    • Oleaut32.dll 2.40.4275.1
    • Olepro32.dll 5.0.4275.1
    • Stdole2.tlb 2.40.4275.1
NOTE: Please be aware that in addition to these core runtime files, you will need to include the executable file(s) that you created with Visual Basic as well as other support files in your project. Also be aware that Visual Basic programs often use other controls outside of the core set of runtime files.

    Installation Instructions
To make the Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6) dependency module available in your Setup Factory 7.0 projects, follow the steps below:
    1. Close Setup Factory 7.0, if it is running.
    2. Browse to the folder where Setup Factory 7.0 is installed on your system. By default it is C:\Program Files\Setup Factory 7.0.
    3. Open the folder called Dependencies.
    4. Unzip the contents of vb6sp6.zip (see bottom of article) into the dependencies folder.
    5. Create a subfolder of Dependencies and name it vb6sp6.
    6. Download the Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6) redistribution pack (VB6.0-KB290887-X86.exe) into a temporary directory.
    7. Extract the file vbrun60sp6.exe from the downloaded file VB6.0-KB290887-X86.exe into the vb6sp6 subfolder of Dependencies.
    8. Restart Setup Factory 7.0.
To use your new dependency module, select Resources > Dependencies from the main menu and click the Add button. Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6)should now be visible in the list of available modules.

I understand that there was a security update to VB6 SP6 in 2009 that resulted in updated versions of mscomm32.ocx, mswinsck.ocx, and comcat.dll (and perhaps others). It might be worth updating the version of comcat.dll in the VB6 dependency module.

This came up because my users found that the 1998 version of mscomm32.ocx does not work with Windows 7.
