True Update just gave me Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Started my latest project in AMS4 and True Update went berserk had to 'OK' it through Zone Alarm what seemed like dozens of times.

Alright, I'm exaggerating but just how much info is it collecting? It 'connected' four times if I got the count right.

It is not collecting any info. Zero. I run the web stuff and I can guaantee you 100% that we don't collect any remote user data of any type, ever.

Zone Alarm is notorious for alerting on harmless stuff, sounds like a configuration issue but I don't use ZA so I'm not sure...

As to the CTS I can tell you that a banana per day will add anough potassium to your diet to likely fix that, try it out. That's how doctors cured "Slash" from Guns'n'Roses when he got CTs back in the 80's.

OK so I've got the latest version of AMS4 - 4.0.0.6 but True Update wants to connect to check for a version update. I say "Yes go ahead and do it." It does what it needs to do and then says you've got the latest version. But then says I want to connect again, so I say " Yes go ahead do whatever you want." I'm just curious but heh - :

Hmmm, not sure about that, but did you try reconfiguring it in EDIT > PREFERENCES > UPDATES ? That might correct it a bit for now...

Actually, having been a Zone Alarm Pro user for two years running, I can say that Zone Alarm is a very reliable tool, when understood completely.

It doesn't alert falsely - it simply alerts when software running on your computer attempts to provide a certain service to a given, untrusted network (such as the Internet). This includes both outgoing and incoming traffic (it reports which is being attempted).

True, many such connections are completely harmless. But computers do not come equipped with intuition. That's why, upon each alert that a user receives, there's an option to check that allows a specific piece of software to do its Internet thing without future firewall blockage. I'll tell you it's rare that I ever see an alert, since most of my software has been cleared.

Yep, it's been a round for a while. As with all firewalls it's usually just an issue of configuring and understanding it for sure...

I'd got my tongue planted firmly in my cheek when I posted Eric, but seriously, my situation is probably different to yours. I have to evaluate new stuff all the time and amongst other things I want to know what software is doing in the background. I've got ZAPro and find it a very good indicator of what is happening without needing to know any technical stuff. I don't actually need it now because I'm behind NAT and an SPI firewall but it serves a purpose.

The reason that the Update connected so many times is probably that it updated itself. This is a fairly difficult thing to do as it must:

1) Connect to the Internet the first time that it is run
2) it sees that it must update itself and so downloads the setup to do this
3) the update closes itself, then runs the setup.
4) The setup changes the file and then runns the update
5) The update can then run normally with the latest runtime.

I count 3 or 4 connections there.

It is very rare that the client must update itself. Hope this clears things up.
