How to check third party software installed

Is there an easy way of checking that a third party software package has already been installed?

Really the only ways to determine if a given software is installed is by reading Registry entries or by searching for specific files on the user's system. Each piece of software will be different in this respect.

That's a shame - I as hoping that there was a standard and reliable way of doing this.

Apart from the \SOFTWARE key, where do un-install programs put such details? I'm thinking of the add-remove in Windows.
