    Digital Certificates

    Hello all,

Wanted to ask a general question. We're looking to developing a few applications that will be distributed/sold on CD as well as online purchase.

How many of you have Digital Certificates? Have you found any differences/problems with any of the signing authorities/certificates? e.g. Komodo, VeriSign, Tucows, etc?

Any thoughts you'd like to share on these is welcome. An interesting note I read is that Microsoft invested in VeriSign (the Digital Certificate daddy) a few years back.

    Can you say Anti-Trust?

    Cheers,
    Dean

Komodo is probablly the cheapest, but the hardest to "get" the actual certificate. They have descent support
verisign is the 'defacto standard' and most expensive

Some (like komodo) certificates can't be used to sign driver level files.

    Thanks Josh,

I think I get what you're saying, but as for signing applications (primarily to get rid of the Win 7 UAC message) the Komodo works fine? I was also looking at Tucows. They offer a Komodo certificate for $75/1 yr, $199/3 yrs (going by memory, numbers might be a little off...)

    Thanks,
    Dean

it won't get rid of the warning, it'll just make it less ominous.
    komodo certs work fine.
the thing people don't realize -- the signed exe will work 'forever' -- it's the ability to sign that is restricted to the length of time you purchase your certificate for..

Sounds like a scam to me but I know nothing of certificates.

Considering that Microsoft has a significant investment in VeriSign (the defacto standard) I agree with you CS about it being a scam. The trouble is that with Win7 you get the big bright yellow "WTF" message from Windows.

We're looking at distributing apps on CD and having an online version available as well. These will be small purchase amounts relying on repeat sales to the "less than savvy" crowd so we need to ensure the customers "utmost confidence" in us.

The Digital Certs are a crock, but what else is there to do but bend over and touch your toes...
