If you are up for a suggestion, like I have done in the past...

Research your local area (e.g. city) and see what businesses are there.

    Next:

    1) approach them about creating a small application for them, that would help speed up a process they have to do often (e.g. simple bookkeeping, employee information tracking, inventory control)

    2) create a demonstration that you can bring with you via laptop, CD, or perhaps on a USB flash drive

You may find that what you show them is not what they want, but, some businesses will say, "I don't need that, but I could use this".

There, you have now got your foot in the door.

If you get something that works well and becomes a hit... then try taking it to other businesses, or offering it via the Web.

    Best of luck,
    Intrigued

    i got to much work

Research your local area (e.g. city) and see what businesses are there.
i have had a few results from such ventures, my childs school, local shops, some small companys from the local tradeing estates and a pub beleave it or not,

the only way is to get yourself out there, draw up a plan n hit the road and convince them they need you.

I started off years back learning assembler on the Atari st. I was being trained by a company contracted to work for Code masters/Electronic arts. I did a small amount of work on one level on a game called skate or die. But unfortunately the company relocated and i was unable to leave at the time. Then i ended up being a computer manager for a doctors surgery for a few years. they gave me a room with a 386 pc 10000 written Medical records , a medical dictionary and then told me i had to read / evaluate / summarise and then transfer the whole lot. At the end of that contract they offered me another...i ran screaming into the night.
I wanted to get back into the design side of things but had very poor art skills and very little money so i became a pennyless artist for a few years. Then i started play about with the music video side of things .. which bought me back to using the computer again. So then i started to develop some 2D/3D GFX skills and a library of original gfx. Then i got the net and decided to do freelance website design and dived in head first trying to learn how to and learnt Flash and got myself a handful of contracts to do some sites. So i worked all the hours i could for the next 2 months until just 2 weeks before the end of the deadlines i was forced to learn a totally new phrase..."Hard drive crash!". I had used a second hand hard drive to cut costs. So i bought a new hard drive and started again from scratch , got extensions on the deadlines and half worked myself to death trying to get everything finished in a month.lol. 4 days before then end of the deadline i ran into a very unexpected problem. My first internet worm, which rapidly developed into a bootsector virus . so that was the end of that (the first person to mention the word backups gets it..! ).
A few months later i discovered ut2003 and was blown away with the Unreal editor and then decided ..Mapper sounds good.So i started studying the art of level mapping , then came the Big unreal Make something competion. So my life went on hold for 3 years while i studied every aspect of the 3d unreal 2.5 engine and making 3d games 24/7. There was no instruction book on how to use uscript at the time so we all had to practically back engineer the whole scripting language.I managed to solve a whole bunch of things that hadn't been done before which i'm very happy with http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/Legacy:VitalOverdose + 100's of half finished levels 10'000's of original textures and sound sfx and 3d models. I was getting ready to go for hunting for some real work using the unreal engine 3, when it did finally come on the market i was shocked to find out that everything had been changed... nothing i had be putting together for the last 4 yrs would even be usable on the new system. Not only that but they dropped the scripting language altogether and adopted a 100% visual programming system made from box's and wires. nothing like the amazingly versatile 100% class based system they were using before.
I needed a change so now I've been quite committed to video production/3d fx and for the last year ive spent most of my time producing my own video editing and 2d/3d animation software mainly for my own use and im working on some plug-in for AMS I started out making a few tools for myself and got a bit carried away ..

What? you mean leave my flat?

    Sure , id consider moving.
