AMS 6 keeps locking up on startup...ideas?

    This is weird,

AMS6 keeps locking up on startup. I see the splash screen, but it just sits there for an hour. If I maximize other windows, then minimize them again, it shows the mask of the AMS splash screen with the text or objects from the other windows.

This all seemed to start when I let my friend borrow my USB soundcard (I thought that was GOOD karma? lol). At that point, I started getting "Failed to initiate sound output device" errors (something like that anyways).

I thought it was a corrupted AMS file, so I uninstalled/reinstalled AMS 6 and I'm still getting the same thing. Ironically, AMS 5 boots up just fine. I want to try and plug in the soundcard (the variable in the situation), but alas...my friend's "lovin it" and I don't want to be so rude as to rip it out of his rig so I can "test" something on mine.

I've looked across the forums, but it seems like I'm the only one with this one. I've ran Spybot and AVG, but my system's clean. I've even done a registry clean-up (something that scares the freckles off of me), but it didn't correct anything... =(

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

I believe Adam ran into this in tech support in the past few days. Try this:

Move your "C:\Program Files\AutoPlay Media Studio 6.0\Plugins\Actions\CDAudio" folder somewhere else so that it is not found under "C:\Program Files\AutoPlay Media Studio 6.0\Plugins\Actions".

Than try starting AMS60. Does that help?

If so, can you please let us know the specifics of the OS you are on as well as the card cuasing the problems. Anything you can remember about the process might help (drivers installed, etc.)

    That did it!

    You are the MAN! Hmmm...

I'm running Win XP Home Edition, version 2002 Service Pack 2 on a Dell Dimension DM051 with 1 gig of RAM (don't laugh) and a dual 3 gig processor. I use a Tascam US-122 USB Soundcard. It's never had any conflicts before this episode. Interestingly, when I try to find the driver for the device using it's provided control panel under Microsoft's Control Panel, it pops up with a dialog stating "US-122 Control Panel Startup Error - Can't find the US-122 Driver".

I still think that if I plug in the Sound Card, it'll be peachy. I'll let you know once I get it back from my friend and try it out (wish me luck...getting gear back from a musician is like getting an emerald out of a rocodile..."Romancing the Stone", anyone?).

Until I get the soundcard back and plug it in, AMS doesn't seem to properly boot unless the CDAudio plugin is placed outside of the plugins folder. If it's in there...lock-up. If it's out of there...green light.

Again...I'll try both with the soundcard plugged in so you have all the variables.

    Thanks again!

This was an old school issue that was almost exclusively Windows 2000 specific. I've seen 3 cases of this in a few days on Windows XP. If anyone else runs into this issue then please let us know any details you have about your sound card, and sound drivers.
