Acrobat Version Checking Script

The following is a project settings actions script that I cooked up to handle a more graceful Acrobat check, with user option to install or not install. You will need to have the AcroReader51_ENU_full.exe installer (available from Adobe.com) in order to use this precise script - put that in your Distribution folder for the project. Feel free to modify and share!

The script will check to see if a default PDF viewer is present on the system, and what version that viewer is. If the version pre-dates 5.0.0.0 (of none exists at all), then it will present the option to install the 5.1 version of the software.

This script gives me an endless loop of the original dialog. I included these actions on a text object and when I click on it I just get a dialog that will not disappear (if I click OK or CANCEL). It appears that you have an endless loop

I still get stuck in an endless loop as I have an older version of Acrobat installed (4.0....). In this case the cancel button does not let me out.

Yup. Make sure you use the latest version - the first one had a bug. I recommend you paste it into Project Settings -> Actions. Put it in the On Initialize event handler.

This is my version of the script. This script can be used on page initilaization or on a button that is used to open a PDF. If used on a button, there are lines that are disabled that will need to be reenabled as the Opening function. If used on a initialization of a page, I have a variable %PDFCheck% that will be set to failed. You could use this on other buttons so that if %PDFCheck% = "FAILED" you can print an error to the persons screen, and offer to do the install again, or choose to open the file from source on the CD-ROM.

There is one more disabled line that can be enabled if you are using this to open a file from a button. If the user elects not to install acrobat reader, you can enable this line to have the file opened using files from the CD-ROM.

One of the differences between this and Eric's script is that mine uses less go to statements, and more nested IF statements, but the effect is virtually the same.

Sorry to be such a doo-doo head....but, let's say I have a .pdf catalogue on my CD-ROM....would this script be one action and then the next action would be to EXECUTE FILE?
