Automatically get version number

SF has a session variable screen which contains a Version variable. By default this is a hardcoded value which ends up getting displayed on the User Interface. Wouldn't it make more sense to get this out of a file or assembly? It ends up having to be changed everytime you make a build. It is very easy to forget.
