    Thinking about App. Security?

Well, we all would be smart to remember the basics then:
"For the new Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats, Hollywood implemented a complete copy protection scheme; almost everything has to be encrypted and authenticated. Despite the crypto-stuff in Advanced Access Content System and High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection, they left the backdoor wide open - they forgot about the PrintScreen button [CC]. Using this function you can create exact digital copies of a film picture by picture and reassemble them to a stream." (source: slashdot.org)

Can you imagine the size of the flick though? If you were going frame by frame? 24 frames / sec * 3600 sec/hr * 2 hrs * 1mb/BMP = 172.8 gigs (Approx).

Just goes to show you though, even million (billion?) dollar schemes are flawed. And since there will ALWAYS be a flaw, meaning inevitably the only people prevented from performing certain tasks with protected content are legitimate users, one must ask -- is it worth protecting in the first place?

One point I have pondered on is that even though you can (perhaps should) put levels (walls) of security into your applications. There is always one cracker out there that will have the means to crack it and post-it wide spread. Especially true when your application is very popular.

So, my security deterrant is to make sure my applications never become popular.
