I've been preaching exactly that for many years. If I had a nickel for every person/client who said to me, "You really think people are that fickle? I don't agree, I think we'll be OK compromising..." I would be rich. I'm glad it's finally been officially quantified, now there can be no doubt. There will always be a minority of exceptions, but when dealing with the majority that's exactly how it works. You have to work your designs in hierarchy of cascading priorities, i.e. first it has to be 100% solid "at a glance" then, within that, it has to be highly functional and have depth.

You can bet your bottom dollar that those results juxtapose almost identically onto Autoplay CDs.

I definitely believe it. alot of times when im looking for information, or looking for a product to purchase, i will close the tab in less time than it takes to load the page based on the design quality alone. this is especially true with products. if the company cant get in gear and get something more than a basic text/html site with tables and frames(dear god i HATE frames.) then what am i to expect from the quality of their product? now im not expecting everyone to have some crazy flash animated site with sounds bombarding me everytime i move my mouse, but some sign of an actual design process goes a long way imho.
