When I try to type in Japanese using OpenType (Unicode) fonts, the fonts are accepted but the display shows up as a string of ???s. Surely there must be some way to access the full Unicode array of characters...

mmmmm.
I am dealing with hebrew on a constant basis and use Unicode characters.
Where don't you see them? in your scripting window or on the page itself?
And as to the fonts, do you choose the proper font script?

The scripting window shows up fine. In the main page is where the ??? show up. I am using standard TrueType and OpenType fonts when this happens.
Are you sure that your windows operating system is geared toward Japanese?

I use Japanese in dozens of applications, never with a problem. Even things like the ordinary "Notepad" work with Japanese characters
Sorry, Man...No more ideas...
Hope someone else can help you...
