You have to ask yourself, "why the need for the paper?" The simple answer is that he needs to cover up his shenanigans.

Basically, when he comes out to "take off his shoes," as an apparent afterthought, there is plenty of time for someone to pull a complete switcheroo of the window itself while the camera is on a close-up - one with a pre-cut hole large enough for him to climb through.

Honestly, I'm pretty easy to fool, since I think I'm a kid at heart. This one, pardon the pun, is pretty transparent. As for the audience, they are pretty good for a bunch of infomercial stooges.

Yeah, I was thinking guillotine setup with a hole sliding into position...but wanted other opinions...either way, a nice trick...

Also, when the shot pans down on his feet, it is fast-forwarded so we really don't know how long he took to remove those boots...plenty of time for the switch.
