That's interesting because "way back when" that's what Flash was being touted for in the future, i.e. the notion was that someday we'd see Flash in microwaves, dashboards, fridges, etc... That was several years ago and I always sort of figured it would eventually come true, nice to see the first stages of it because the more Flash there is out there, the more relevant our skills are.

I thought that's what everyone was saying about Java (that we'd somehow find it in a toaster one day)? Much cooler if it were to be Flash...

Actually I posted about that aspect too but I edited it out because I didn't want it to be perceived as a flame on Java programmers, because it's not.

You're 100% on the money anyhow, that's exactly what was being said at that exact same time. Java is a can of worms. I knew from the moment I tried to learn Java that it was too much work to ever become the norm. Average people can't get their head around that process, or at the very least they don't enjoy it enough to spend a big chunk of their lives doing it. Java is just not fun to program... I think that has a lot to do with why certain other technologies have grown surprisingly while Java has grown slow but steady unlike the predicted Java explosion of yesteryear.

Back before I worked for IR I remember applying for one job where they required Java. I asked the guy why? He said he wanted to create and manage basic web apps for SMEs. I said, "Great, no problem, I've got that *nailed* with PHP and MySQL. I can create/manage whatever you need in a less time it would take you to do it in JSP, with better performance..." I even showed him some online examples of top notch web apps I had designed. Much more complex than the ones he needed. And he just said, "Nope, uh-uh... Java is the future. We *need* to work in Java." K sera.
