I think there is two versions. Or a split at one point. If that is true then I see why the confusion.



Plus, if you click on your link there it speaks about an older version and not 3.0.

There's only one version of "Camtasia". As you can see here version 3.0 was indeed released in 2001:

There is no question that 3.0 came out this year, just a few months ago.

You are referring now to a different product than originally. Originally you were referring to "Camtasia 3.0", which was released in 2001. Now you are referring to "Camtasia Studio 3.0", that's a tool suite. The version of Camtasia Recorder found in Studio 3.0 is still the same one that was released in 2002 or so AFAIK...

There's the point of confusion. I thought there was a different way of looking at it. One must include the word Studio.

I think there's some confusion as to the products being discussed, here. You're actually both right. There are two separate products (although their functionality is, from what I understand, pretty much the same, and "Camtasia" seems to have been traded in for the more flowery "Camtasia Studio") Strange marketing decision - since it does lead to confusion such as exhibited in this thread - always a bad thing.

The product "Camtasia" is now part of "Camtasia Studio". "Camtasia" hit version 3.0 in 2001. Since the introduction of "Camtasia Studio" there is no longer a product named "Camtasia".

Ya, that's what Eric was stating.

Their functionality isn't the same. Camtasia was a screen capture recording tool. Camtasia Studio is a video/menu production suite. It contains a recording tool but also adds new components such as CamAudioEditor.exe, CamMenuMaker.exe, CamMenuPlayer.exe, CamTheater.exe (export Flash menus), CamDiag.exe, as well as an enhanced CamStudio.exe (They dropped CamProducer for Studio 2.0 I believe) which features timeline/storyboard based editing support for video transitions, callouts, Flash quizzes, Zoom/Pan, narration, PIP, titles, .swf output, advanced batching, etc.

As for the name change, I think it was a good strategy partially executed. My belief is that marketing people within Techmsith had a great new strategy to bring the software forward but management was reluctant to let go of the existing strategy which had been successful for them up to that point, and the result was a 50%-50% commitment to branding the new name properly. I believe that if the new name had been branded properly Camtasia Studio would have retained it's existing market but would also be competing with Sorenson Squeeze et al for lucrative new niches as well. It's a tricky game, really successful branding is all about commitment to an ideal and not trying to cover "all bases at once" which is, ironically, something that's counter-intuitive to most business managers...

What makes the best brands successful is the way they get behind a single idea and throw all their eggs into one basket. McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Walmart, Apple, Microsoft when you think of these names you think of one specific experience. On a brand level they make no apologies for their flaws, and they take lots of risks. They follow through even when they're wrong, and they never question a decision once it's made. Apple is probably the most successful "brand" ever and at the same time is probably one of the most criticized brands ever. The more successful Microsoft gets, the more criticized they are... No coincidence. Anyhow suffice to say that unmitigated risk is a foreign thought process for intelligent, rational folks such as those at Techsmith. So it's quite easy to see how there would be a disconnect between their branding and their technology.

Starbucks sells more music than their critics can even begin to imagine. Now *that's* branding. Except for a few exceptions, most software developers are rational thinkers who would have trouble digesting the level of risk/criticism Starbucks took on when it began retailing music. I believe Techsmith was founded by developers.

Corey, I believe this is before you started using Camtasia (now Camtasia Studio).... myself I have used both in the past.
