An awfully sweet SSL compressor for free (Mac only)

I know we don't have too many Mac folks here but I thought I would post this for those who do visit, it's an impressive looking VST/AU plug-in for Macs only. A repro of the mic compressor from the famed SSL "E" series consoles. Enjoy:

Interesting, Leo LaPorte said on his podcast "The Techguy #181" that he does all his audio editing on PC "because it's faster".

Plus he recommends iRiver for MP3 players, not iPods. Also interesting, I always had him pegged as pro-Apple.

Hee! Leo definitely likes Apple's products, by and large. He has forgotten more about OS X than I'll ever know. Being a fan of the Macintosh operating system does not necessarily force a diametrically opposed viewpoint for Windows, though. I think he's wise to choose the right tool for the job - on a job by job basis. Ask him what computer he'd rather use in most cases for video or photo editing, and I would bet he has a different opinion.

He was saying something on the same podcast about Photoshop running the same on PC as Mac due to the way the software is designed or something to that effect. He said that Photoshop wasn't taking advantage of the full capability of Mac under certain conditions. I can't recall the entire context of that comment though so I'm probably not grasping what he meant, but it seemed like something to that effect...

Yeah - you'd gawk at the new real-time editing functions in Apple's own iPhoto product (part of the iLife suite), and the new, more beefy, Aperture. I had the most eye-opening experience watching a colleague work on it during a shoot this week. There's nothing else like it yet available for any operating system.

Live histograms are huge. And the rotation tool is simple and renders beautiful results. Aperture is not a Photoshop killer by any stretch, but it should give Adobe pause. There are some cool things Apple is doing. For one, UI is much more intuitive.

The people who actually pay for Photoshop won't bat an eye over Aperture. They're not in the market for image editing software... Photoshop is a very deep product, I can't imagine any first version software being anywhere near as functional.

I'm not predicting a downfall for Photoshop.

I'm a Photoshop user (since version 3, actually, and I have paid for every version I have owned, thanks). I know I'm a sort of anomaly of sorts when it comes to my computing habits, but I assure you I'm far from the only long-time Photoshop user who will gladly ALSO own Aperture. And I'll pay for that, too.

I can't picture many people who pay for Photoshop also paying for Aperture personally. Especially businesses and advanced users. Why? There's no image editing you can do in Aperture which you can't do (probably quicker) in Photoshop. The key sales appeal of Aperture is to people who have never seen Photoshop.

I don't think many people buy both Premiere and Vegas, and I don't think many people buy both Cubase and Cakewalk, so I expect that pattern to hold vis-a-vis Aperture...

Actually, you're right... No one would buy both Premiere and Vegas. Most video production shops would buy Final Cut Pro.

Call around the various video production companies in your town and ask them what software they use. You might be surprised at how many don't handle production on a Windows box.

Same goes for pro photographers. And that's why Apple made this software. Not for the masses. Not, alas, for graphic designers. It's right there in their marketing hype. Photographers.

Well they'll definitely find some consumers no doubt, Apple always does. But I anticipate almost no overlap with Photoshop users, photographers or otherwise...
