    could not start the setup

I have attached a screen shot of the error, when trying to run a SF6 install I get “could not start the setup”. I even created SF6 installer with all code stripped out, but still receive the error. This is on a Windows XP Pro workstation on a domain, does this no matter what users is logged in Local and domain admins have both been tried. SF7 project works great!! But this installer with 100’s of lines of code, on a product that will be discontinued end of this year, so I would rather not rewrite it.

This error come up first thing, some files are copied to the users temp folder, I believe installer gets confused about domain vs local users accounts but not sure, any help is appreciated, you can also hit me in MSN messenger.

    Can't start the setup

    Jason,

Unfortunately, I do not yet have a solution. However, this issue is occuring with one customer of ours and is the first problem out of thousands of installs. We have verified the user has administrative privileges in XP.

I never did get any kind of an answer on this, I am sure its some kind of Bug in SF6, to fix the issue I recreated the install in SF7. What I could figure out is that for some reason SF6 get confussed over the temp folders, I think it has to do over how the users gets added to the domain, and the \Documents and settings folder\name.domain\ folder temp settings I think some want to go to the one with out the domain name and the other with the domain name, I never did find a work around other than recreated the install, if your project is small and you dont have SF7, if I have the time I am happy to try to recreate it for you else wise not sure what you might try.

If the exact same setup works on most other systems, my guess would be that the user's anti-virus (or similar low-level system utility) is knocking it out. I experienced a similar problem a few weeks back because AVG anti-virus was incorrectly flagging SUF60-created setups as being a virus. The problem was fixed in the next virus definition updates.

Again, this is just a guess, but maybe worth looking into. See if it works properly if they update their virus definitions and/or disable the anti-virus program for the duration of the install.

I was able to recreate the installer in SUF7 and the user could then run the installer. I am not sure why only SUF6 installers should cause a problem; with our particular customer, I was able to verify that she could run other installers which she downloaded from the internet. I guess it could still be possible that an antivirus program could be blocking SUF files only. My customer has Norton, not AVG.

Thanks to both of you for your feedback.
