I'm thinking of getting a used small notebook computer for use as a backup storage device for my digital photos whist out "in the field". What I'm looking for is something that is REALLY thin... it doesn't have to be fast as it's sole purpose in life will be as a sexy storage device. Any suggestions?

The alternative I'm thinking about is a $289 30GB Apple IPod Photo they have on sale over at Circuit City.

As I started to read your post I was thinking about an iPod with the camera cable. I have a 30 GB photo and love it. I have not gotten a camera cable for it yet, mainly because my Camera went by the wayside and I need to look into getting a new one. I recently saw in PC Photo a mobile storage device, it has a LCD screen on it and you can plug your camera media into it to download it to the device while in the field.

Great leads... thanks. Gee, "MicroSolutions". I haven't thought about them in ages. Let's see... I think it was from them that I got a card for my IBM-XT that let me read Apple ][e disks. Boy... THAT ages me, eh?

Correct me if I'm wrong, and if I am I'll eat a bug, but I think the "photo" line has been dropped, I think it's all just "iPODs" now. Or at least that's what I read:

The name has been dropped - all iPods beyond the Mini now have photo capability. Even the 20GB $299 version. Pretty nifty.

The product line was dropped, which is quite a bit different than a name change, particularly in terms of logistics. Anytime a manufacturer drops a new product line you can bet it's due to poor sales. It's a big decision to drop a line you just invested a lot of time into, you don't do something like that lightly.
