    Fav Utilities

In another forum that I frequent, someone posted a thread asking everyone to post their favorite utilites/programs that they wouldn't want to be without. It's been interesting to see what other people have found.

Besides the obvious IR products here are a couple that I use daily.

RAdmin: Remote acccess tool. I use this constantly for transfering files between work and home. Also for remotely helping users with computer issues. I really like this app, but if you read through their forum, you'll see that they are very slow updating. They also have a couple free network scanning tools that have come in very handy to have in my little black bag.

FolderBox: Addon for Windows Explorer that gives you another pane to use for copying files, etc... (it's free too!)

AnalogX: A nice little site with quite a few free apps/utils for Networking, Audio, Programming, and some system utilites.

    How 'bout you?

Two of my fave free utilities...

    Irfanview

If you're looking for a lean and mean graphics utility, IrfanView is a top choice--and the fact that it's both free and a high-quality program makes it nearly irresistible.

Import images, view images, perform basic image editing, create slide shows, and convert files from one format to another.

The program lets you set the compression level when you save files, and it supports all major graphics formats, including .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .png, and .tif.

Great for batch processing and quick image viewing. Also saves in .ico format which has proven useful...

    ScreenHunter

Capture rectangle, window and full screen with mouse pointer
    • Save captures in BMP, JPEG and GIF file
    • Hotkey from F1 to F12 and Print Screen key

Outlook Express Backup Wizard is the world's most popular software utility to create backup copies of the Outlook Express email database. Viruses, software failures, or power outages can destroy your Outlook Express and all your email. Outlook Express Backup Wizard helps you secure your Outlook Express: in the event of a crash, the wizard will bring it back to life in no time!
    Outlook Express Backup Wizard

Free trial available! Less than one (1) MB download

Check this out... it copies the tree-structure even of the folders (ie. Inbox, Outbox, etc.). And... even the end-user created folders!

    Code Keeper v1.0

Code Keeper is a utility for programmers, web authors, database designers or anyone else that needs to keep track of and reuse source code fragments. All of your code fragments can be recorded, annotated, organized and retrieved with ease. Just cut and paste code fragments to and from your source code editor. Using a hierarchical tree structure you can organize your code fragments in a way that makes sense to you. The code database created with Code Keeper can then be automatically compressed and encrypted for safe and compact transport and storage.

Was going to mention Irfanview but..........

Does anybody know if there is a program for Mac that compares to Irfanview? Just curious. Thanks.

Irfanview has been a part of my daily toolkit for years, I've had it as my default system image viewer since about 2000 or so. Irfan is a decent guy and his software rocks!

A few of mine (besides some of the above):

avicodec gives info on all sorts of video and audio files plus installed codecs on your machine.

Virtual Drive Manager from Linasoft which allows you to make a virtual drive out of a folder.

DBPowerAmp which converts audio files to/from various formats.

TMPGEncoder to convert AVI to mpg, juggle with mpg files and more.

    Among others....

None of them is free, but…

Total Commander; the two (++) pane file manager. The feature list goes to the moon; synchronizing CD RW backups, FTP client ………... (I "never" use Windows Explorer).

Help & Manual; Help authoring system; WinHelp 16/32, HTML Help, Browser Based Help, e-Books, PDF, Printed Manuals. One source; several output formats. Includes Impict; a great screen capture utility.

One of my all time favs is ColorImpact If you're brain dead like me and can't pick two colors to match or blend together, this is the only way to go.

    Oh yeah...

Speaking of color, here is a great (free) color picker....

    Pixie

    Here's their description:

Pixie is an easy-to-use, fast and tiny utility designed especially to fit the needs of Webmasters and Designers. Its a colour picker that includes a mouse tracker. Run it, simply point to a colour and it will tell you the hex, RGB, HTML, CMYK and HSV values of that colour. You can then use these values to reproduce the selected colour in your favorite programs. Pixie will also show the current x y position of your mouse pointer. Its the only tool you'll need for working with colours.
