Any luck networking Win XP with Win ME?

Has anyone had any success networking a WIN XP machine to a WIN ME? I have heard there are problems doing this and I have now seen it first hand. The two just do not want to connect....

Prior to adding the XP machine I have two ME machines that talk just fine...

I have tried (per Microsoft) running the WIN XP network setup disk on my ME machines, but this still does not work.

Any users out there with experience on this?

A couple things.

Are the computers using a common protocol? If it is TCP/IP, can you ping between the machines?

Are you runnning a software firewall (ie ZoneAlarm, etc..)? If so, try shutting them down and connecting.

TCP/IP is on both the XP and ME systems. I have not yet delved into pinging.

The only firewall is the one thats built into XP, but it is disabled.

Well that would be a good start. See if you can actually pass packets between the 2 machines by pinging the other.

Not sure if XP/ME is the same as XP/98 ...

I found the only way to do it with XP/98 was to create user accounts on the XP PC that held the same info as the currently logged on 98 user account.
The 98 PC then "logs in" to that account on XP - so to speak!

This may hold true with XP/ME too.

Good call. That does hold true on any NT based OS in a workgroup. I thought he was saying he couldn't see the other machine in the Network Neighborhood

Re: Any luck networking Win XP with Win ME?

I am running the Home version. I cannot see the XP machine in the Network Neighborhood in either ME machine.

Also note that I am attempting to configure that each machine has a direct connection to the internet thru a hub, not using any one machine as a gateway to the internet.

I will post what I come up with.... thanks for the posts.

Re: Any luck networking Win XP with Win ME?

Well, I am able to ping freely from XP to ME machine and vice versa. At this point the machines cannot see each other in the network neighborhood. I looked at the IP, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway settings on all 3 machines.

On my 2 ME machines, the SM and DG settings were identical, so I tried changing the XP machine to match these settings, retaining the original IP noted from the XP machine.

After I did that I lost internet connectivity on the XP machine. I reset the IP on the XP machine to "Obtain IP automatically" and internet connectivity was restored.

I am still working on this....

Re: Any luck networking Win XP with Win ME?

If you will, try this:

On your ME machine share a folder, have its share name be "test" (no quotes)

On your XP machine: drop to a command prompt and type this:

Net use O: \\Your_ME_Machines_Name\Test

Obviously replace the Your_ME_Machines_Name with the actual name of your ME box. O: must be an available drive letter. What this does is map a drive, in this case O: to the test folder. Let me know what the command returns.

Heres the result:

"System error 67 has occurred.

The network name cannot be found."

Just a thought - check the workgroup is the same.
WinXP default workgroup is MSHOME
WinME default workgroup is WORKGROUP

... they need to be the same, of course.
