Programming in Lua - "...the beginning"

This thread will contain any and all things to do with the Lua, which is one of the fastest (source: back cover of their official book) scripting languages!

This is the language that is embedded in AutoPlay Media Studio 5.x.

Some may not know this but Lua is used widely in many other applications and market segments (eg. game development).

What turned me on with regards to Lua? Well, I put the pieces together.

1. Lua can be used with all of the current, popular operating systems (Linux, Windows, etc.) (Learn one scripting language instead of several!)

2. Lua is free software! (Free... enough said)

3. Lua can fit on a floppy! (Thus I can easily load such into my Jornada 568 and use my Targus foldable keyboard to code in just about any location!)

4. Easy to learn and use! (This is why I believe this language is getting popular, fast)

Are you interested now? Good! Here are a few links to get you started:

Lua: Documentation (aka. Help)

Lua: Online Compiler (In another words: Test your code out in real-time!)

Lua: Windows IDE (A graphical user interface for developing Lua applications!)

I hope others that are knowledgeable with Lua will post and help those of us that are just starting out.

Remember, I am by no means anything but a beginner with respects to the Lua (scripting) language. My hope is that by starting this thread other folks will find a place to gather and chat on the topic of Lua.

Sincerely,

Update - I did not forget about coding in LUA (outside of AMS's built-in offshoot)... I have instead taken some time to just about complete my first PHP (5) book and decided to go next head long into Flash MX 2004! To me it's all about trying to nail down the resources that I am bound to use and use more often up front!

Sincerely,

That's a good plan, in the real world PHP is probably a higher priority than Lua vis-a-vis getting handy stuff done quickly.

Hi. I would like to know more about Lua programming. What would be the easiest way to learn Lua and program with it ?

I also tried to click on the Windows IDE link but the link is not good anymore. Is there a similar program that would do the same thing ?

Thank you!
