A forced reboot would be a nice additional option to SUF because of this worrying bug report I got from a user:
--- Start Quote --- Hi Paul; I think I've found a nasty thing to do with the installation of QToolz. I've done this twice now which is a testament to my stupidity... When you install QToolz, you are told that you must reboot; and would you like to do that now... If you click 'No' then another messagebox pops up saying that you can't use it until you reboot. Anyway, if you try to run it (still no reboot) it doesn't work... Fair enough. However, upon rebooting, the machine is completely knackered as far as windows goes. The screen pops up, and then you get an illegal operation from Explorer and all you can do is ctrl-alt-del and then select 'shut down.' (or swith off.) Horror of horrors, the very same thing happens in safe mode too... The first time it happened I wasn't sure what had caused it; my machine just seemed to cave in inexplicably (I forgot I installed and tried to run QToolz, it was days between this and a reboot.) However, I did it last night again (that'll teach me to ignore warnings) and when it didn't work I just rebooted... Machine - bust Luckily I have Drive Image 3 and I was up and running in under 5mins (it was after your last Email that I jumped on a website and bought the thing there and then - thanks...) Do you know what causes the error?? I thought the usual reason for needing to reboot was that a service was changed - maybe it changes explorer itself? Either way, maybe you could make it *impossible* to run before a reboot (well, it is now, but kind of friendlier!) OR force a reboot?? -- Andrew --- End Quote --- |

Re: Forced reboot option?
Hi,
I admit that this would be useful sometimes, although most often it is a more desirable solution to give users the option to reboot. This is because sometimes they have other files open or things like that. This being true, in situations where attempting to run the program crashes the users computer, a feature like this would be welcomed. Thanks for the suggestion. mark.

Re: Forced reboot option?
Hi Mark,
When I say "forced reboot" I don't mean without any warning... I mean that a dialog should come up first to give the user time to close down any open apps. A warning given BEFORE the installation could then prepare them for this forced reboot. Regards, Paul. |
