Grin Unable to run setup more than one time on the same machine

I am using Setup Factory 5.0.1.1. My problem is that I am not able to run setup executibles on the same test machine more than one time. The following is what happened.

(1) I created a setup.exe using Project Wizard on the developement machine. I used all default settings and default screens. I did not make any registry and security settings. I burned the setup.exe on a CD.
(2) I did the install on a test machine with the setup.exe burned on the CD. The installed program ran ok on the test machine.
(3) I revised the project code and produced a new setup.exe on the developement machine and burned the new setup.exe on a new CD
(4) I uninstalled the previously installed program from the test machine and restarted the test machine.
(5) Then I tried to do install again on the test machine with the new setup.exe on the new CD.
(6) The setup started and displayed a screen which disappeared quickly before I can read any thing on it. This screen looked like the background screen of the setup I saw during the first-time install.
(7) I tried another setup.exe of a very very very simple project and I got the same thing as in (6). This probably means that the failure of install after the first time is not specific to a project, but rather, due to the general (or default preference) settings in my Setup Factory environment. But what should I do?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Unable to run setup more than one time on the same machine

Hi,
Have you tried restarting your system? After performing an uninstall it is usually good practice, especially when testing, to restart the computer.

Re: Unable to run setup more than one time on the same machine

Mark:

Thank you for your reply to my message. But I still need your help.

As indicated in item (4) of my original message, after the uninstall I did restart the test computer before another install.

Actually, after the very first install of a SUF setup.exe, I am not able to perform install with any other Setup Factory setup.exe, even if I did uninstall and restart.

I am using two test machines. One machine uses Windows95 and the other use Windows98. I have the same problem on both test machines.

I was able to perform an install of a SUF setup.exe only if I reformat the test machines and reinstall the operating systems.

It looks like I can do one and only one install on one machine.

Thanks

Grin Re: Unable to run setup more than one time on the same machine

Hi,

I was wondering if a solution to Mark's problem was ever discovered? I have a colleague with the same problem happening on two WinNT (SP6) machines.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Cool Re: Unable to run setup more than one time on the same machine

Hi,

I found a solution to the above problem. It turns out that the file "RICHED32.DLL" is not supposed to be distributed to Windows NT and 2000 machines. (See MSDN article "INFO: Distribution Issues with Riched32.dll".)

Copying a RICHED32.DLL from a working NT system to the trashed systems gets Setup Factory (and WordPad) up and running again.

Shouldn't Setup Factory be able to catch trouble files like this? (Another example trouble file would be COMCAT.DLL.) Having Setup Factory not install trouble files (unless it is a "safe" version of the file) would solve a lot of headaches...

(If you are using Visual Basic, a "safe" version of RICHED32.DLL that can be distributed to NT/2000 platforms is in the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB98\Wizards\PDWizard\Redist\" directory.)

Sincerely,
Terry Rasmussen
