Upgrading SUFWI
Hi,
I am currently running build 1004 of SUFWI and have just downloaded build 1007. When I double-click the MSI file to install 1007 I get a Windows Installer message saying that "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue...". The message then directs me to use Add/Remove Programs to configure or remove the existing version. When I go into Add/Remove Programs I only have a "Remove" option for SUFWI. Does this mean that I cannot 'upgrade' an existing SUFWI installation ? Will I lose any settings that I have made ? Is this a 'feature' of Windows Installer setups or is it a setting within the SUFWI msi file ? Will the same thing happen to my customers when they come to upgrade my software using an MSI file ? FYI - I also have SUF7 installed on my PC, but I can't get rid of that as I have not moved all of my install files over to SUFWI yet (and won't have for a few months). Cheers, Dave |

Dave,
That is standard Windows Installer behavior when you double-click an installer package that has the same product code as one that is already installed on the system. If you want it to automatically install the new version without removing the old one first (i.e. "minor upgrade") then you need to run msiexec.exe on the command line with the following options: msiexec.exe -i "<path to your installer.msi>" REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus If you turn on the bootstrapper option and wrap the installer package (MSI file) in an executable, then the install will automatically be run that way for you. Uninstalling the previous version (1.1.1004) will not remove any of your project files, although it will reset some of your preferences within the software. You can use the command line options above from Start > Run to perform the minor upgrade instead of an uninstall/reinstall. |

I had a little difficulty with upgrading myself. I use custom bootstrap files and I had to transfer all my custom bootstrap code from the old file (xml) to the new one because the new version of software gave me errors when I tried to use the bootstrap files. But once I edited the new bootstrap files basically by copying and pasting the custom code, it worked.

Hi Brett,
Thanks for the info, very informative. As a request from a SUFWI user, can future versions be wrapped inside an executable file so that it seemlessly upgrades the existing version ? Cheers, Dave |
