Confused over updating client server file

I am confused on the wording of the help file.

I have sent a client server file out and am about to update my software. However, I have also amended the client server script (changed some windows/wording).

The help file seems to indicate this is a problem (somethign about updating itself).

Can I not just send the new client server files (cli & dat) to the clients?

Thank you

There is no problem with doing it at all. In fact, most of it happens automatically. For instance if you publish an update that has a changed .dat file when the user runs the update with the old dat file it will automatically download the new one and restart the update client program.

You can (and should) re-distribute the newest version of the update client and dat file with your software installation.

Thanks

Thanks for that.

My confusion was that the help file "seemed" to indicate that the DAT file was placed on the server. I do not do that but send the DAT and CLI files in the install itself.

I only publish the ts1/2/3 files to the server.

John,

It seems you might be confused with the versions.

the CLI files are part of TrueUpdate version 1. The client side used the .exe and an associated .cli file. The server side had a .uif file

Version 2 on the other had, client side has the .exe and an associated .dat. Server side it has the .ts1, .ts2 and .ts3 files.

If you are using version 2 of TU then you will have in your 'release' folder the relevent .exe and .dat which should be installed on the client machine.

When the client runs the update check these files may get updated (and you will get the message about it needing to restart). This means it has downloaded the latest version of itself (.exe and/or .dat(for client side script changes)) from the servers .ts1,.ts2 and .ts3 files.

Be aware however when updating software on the client machine that the TU2 .exe and .dat files will be current BEFORE you update the rest of the your software.

Therefore you will want to exclude these files from any update installation(s) as it is redundant and also can also lead to trying to update "files in use".
