strange router problem
Just a quickie for the initiated...
I had the Linksys router that we used at home for years die today. So, I ventured out and bought a spiffy new Linksys BEFSX41. For some reason, most web sites can't be reached now. Indigo Rose is one of the ones that is reachable, thankfully. I can see Google, but not eBay. I can visit some sites and their images won't show. Others don't respond at all. Nothing else about my network has changed. Can anyone offer any clues? Does this ring a bell for someone? |

A poster in another thread I found on the 'Net said, with regard to the Linksys BEFSX41:

It's funny - I can get to the Linksys site, but their live support feature doesn't work right. So, that's out for now.
I tried the UPNP setting, and that had no affect. However, after some more experimenting, I found that if I turn off SPI, then all sites work. I think I'll fly like this since I have a software firewall running on all computers on the network anyway. Thanks for the help, guys! |

I find this has worked more reliably in the past when I am trying to get a customer's system working along the yahoo games, pogo games type of websites. |

I use Java all the time when I'm running GoToMyPC. So, I think it's due to the same router snafu.

Hi Eric,
It sounds like it might be a DNS problem, you could try flushing your DNS (info here) or you could try setting your preferred DNS servers manually (info here). I know when I installed my router at home and had it set to be "always on" I had to set my DNS servers manually, otherwise after a day or so I couldn't get to any sites.

It sure seems like Linksys routers have more problems than most (from what I have gathered on and off the Web)... My Netgear router just keeps chugging along. It took nine (9) minutes to setup my Netgear and that was the first I had ever done. Testament to the quality of software and design I do believe of the Netgear line of routers.
One other common theme for problems with Linksys routers... was to go back a firmware update or two. Good luck with it Eric. Nothing like having a new "toy" and the sucker won't cooperate. |
