Well today I upgraded my Real Player to 10.5. OK so we all know up until now Real Player has basically sucked in a fairly profound sort of way. Well I'm happy to report that 10.5 is a quantum leap. Much, much better, plus I noticed that Real seems to have smartened up quite a bit and has ceased their reknown trickery, i.e. you can easily find the free player on their site now plus the installer doesn't try to sneak a bunch of crap onto your system as all prior Real installers traditionally have. Truth is that Real's installers in the past are easily the most obviously and consistently devious I've ever seen from any major company. Looks like they might have taken a swift kick in the wallet over the last few years because of that and are desperately doing the right thing now in a bid to save what little they have left. That's my take on it anyhow because this release seems to be *extra* good.

Anyhow I for one am very happy at this development. Check out the new release if you haven't, I don't say that lightly, it's worth the install. My real links now launch instantly and play perfectly. I put this player through some uber wanky tests and it hasn't even burped. This is the first respectable release from Real in almost a decade. :)

I was also pleased that my player upgraded itself from 9.x to 10.5 for free. Performance is now remarkably increased and *finally* the thing is reliable and not cacking on a stream every 20 seconds. :) Thumbs up to Real, perhaps this is the dawning of a new day for them. Diversity is healthy and I really do hope to see these guys pull this one out of the fire... This is a glimpse at what the Real format could be if they could just keep their nose to the grindstone for a minute. Of course after the past few years of pure sadness from their product and marketing teams, it's going to take them years to dig out of the hole they've created even if they do everything right. But every journey starts with a single important step, and 10.5 is definitely that. :)
