View Full Version : Slow Builds with Certain Anti-Virus Software Running

Good morning,
It has come to my attention that certain customers are experiencing *very* slow builds with Setup Factory 7.0. While it seems to only be a small number of people are experiencing this issue, what should only take 5-10 minutes even for fairly large projects is taking an hour or more.
If you are experiencing this issue, the quick solution is to disable your anti-virus software before you "publish" your installer. It seems that certain anti-virus software (not all) is for some reason interfering with the build process.
We are currently investigating the situation and will report back here as soon as we know more. In the meantime, we'd like to know if you are having this problem or not. Please post your responses here, and state whether this issue is affecting you or not, what anti-virus software you are using (and exact version) and what operating system you are running.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you over the weekend when our office was closed. Thank you for your understanding.

I have no problem at all!
OS: WinXP Pro SP2
AV: Norton AntiVirus Professional v. 10.0.1.13
---
And it's a happy day! This morning I started with my second "conversion" of a SUF project. (The first one was very simple, in silent mode.) I say "conversion" with quotation marks because I decided not to do a strict conversion of the SUF6 project. It should be a shame not to take advantage of all the new features in SUF7.
Now the end user can't possibly do any mistake at all. Everything is checked by the SUF project, different screens are displayed as appropriate. (The app is not an "ordinary" installer; it's an app renewing the user's license permission – when the invoice is PAID.) I have now tried checkboxes and other controls, conditionally starting an EXE after shutdown. I struggled a bit with the state of the controls, but I figured it out. It is in fact very easy and logical.
The design is wonderful! I'm really proud (and can't hide it). Thanks for SUF7 - a marvellous product. THIS IS FUN.
(But I'm looking forward to study Darryl's demo project; I have more to learn.)

Pentium 4 1.7 G
512 MB DDR RAM
Windows XP Professional SP2
Trend Micro Internet Security
Program Version 11.31
Engine Version 7.100
Pattern Version 2.180.00
As far as I know, these are the most recent versions of everything - or at least that's what the program update in my anti-virus software tells me.

Norton Antivirus '2002' v 8.07.17c with latest defs.
running on XP-Pro SP2
NO compile, build or 'at run-time' issues. All functioning as expected.
btw: XPSP2 service pack documentation refers to various MCaffee
products and versions and others 'not functioning 'correctly' under SP2..
You never know...

Yep, I'm suspicious of the SP2 connection as well. Wonder if anyone can verify that this happens with other O.S.
Just to confirm this problem does not manifest itself with either McAfee 4.03 or AVG 7.x with building under XP SP2 or installing to Win95B system with a 2000 file project - imports in less than 30 seconds.

What version of SUF 70 do you have (see Help > About)? Has anyone else experienced this? How do you have SUF configured? Where is it installed to?

Do you mean that it takes up to 5 mins to start Setup Factory? That's extraordinary! There must be something wrong on your side.
I have a weaker machine. I just clocked the start up time (v7.01.0) to aprox 10 sec (depending on the workload). Disabling my Ant Spyware/Anti Trojan Horses/Anti Virus and Firewall reduced the start up time to 6 sec.

Nope, Its setup factory, it take anywhere between 1 and 5 minutes to open, from the start menu. So its not project specific...
I could try reinstalling I suppose?

Yeah, that wouldn't hurt. What you can do if you still have the problem after re-installing is to get a file monitor program like Filemon for Windows (http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml) and see what files and folders that SUF70 is accessing during startup. If while using Filemon you see the process lagging on certain files or folders you can let me know and I will investigate further.

WOW! When SUF loads, its as if its scanning my entire system! It looks through all the Windows folders then all the user profile folders!
Basicaly everywhere :(

That is really strange. One of your folders that SUF is looking through (it searches for Themes, Plugins and Languages in those subfolders of SUF70's folder) must be configured wrong. Can you email me a report of the files that it is accessing? brett at indigorose dot com.
