View Full Version : Any luck networking Win XP with Win ME?

Has anyone had any success networking a WIN XP machine to a WIN ME? I have heard there are problems doing this and I have now seen it first hand. The two just do not want to connect....

Prior to adding the XP machine I have two ME machines that talk just fine...

I have tried (per Microsoft) running the WIN XP network setup disk on my ME machines, but this still does not work.

Any users out there with experience on this?

A couple things.

Are the computers using a common protocol? If it is TCP/IP, can you ping between the machines?

Are you runnning a software firewall (ie ZoneAlarm, etc..)? If so, try shutting them down and connecting.

TCP/IP is on both the XP and ME systems. I have not yet delved into pinging.

The only firewall is the one thats built into XP, but it is disabled.

Well that would be a good start. See if you can actually pass packets between the 2 machines by pinging the other.

Also, are we talking XP Home or Pro?

Another thought is to be sure the Computer Browser Service is runningon the XP box.

Not sure if XP/ME is the same as XP/98 ...

I found the only way to do it with XP/98 was to create user accounts on the XP PC that held the same info as the currently logged on 98 user account.
The 98 PC then "logs in" to that account on XP - so to speak!

This may hold true with XP/ME too.

Good call. That does hold true on any NT based OS in a workgroup. I thought he was saying he couldn't see the other machine in the Network Neighborhood

I am running the Home version. I cannot see the XP machine in the Network Neighborhood in either ME machine.

Also note that I am attempting to configure that each machine has a direct connection to the internet thru a hub, not using any one machine as a gateway to the internet.

I will post what I come up with.... thanks for the posts.

Well, I am able to ping freely from XP to ME machine and vice versa. At this point the machines cannot see each other in the network neighborhood. I looked at the IP, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway settings on all 3 machines.

On my 2 ME machines, the SM and DG settings were identical, so I tried changing the XP machine to match these settings, retaining the original IP noted from the XP machine.

After I did that I lost internet connectivity on the XP machine. I reset the IP on the XP machine to "Obtain IP automatically" and internet connectivity was restored.

I am still working on this....

If you will, try this:

On your ME machine share a folder, have its share name be "test" (no quotes)

On your XP machine: drop to a command prompt and type this:

Net use O: \\Your_ME_Machines_Name\Test

Obviously replace the Your_ME_Machines_Name with the actual name of your ME box. O: must be an available drive letter. What this does is map a drive, in this case O: to the test folder. Let me know what the command returns.

Heres the result:

"System error 67 has occurred.

The network name cannot be found."

Just a thought - check the workgroup is the same.
WinXP default workgroup is MSHOME
WinME default workgroup is WORKGROUP

... they need to be the same, of course.

All machines are set to "Mshome"...

Now try the same from the XP box, only this time use the IP of the ME box liek this:

net use O: \\192.168.1.2\test

Let me know...

Do you have the Client for Microsoft networking loaded on both machines?

If you can ping the ME machine from the XP machine, and the command from the XP machine:

net use O: \\Put.Your.ME.Machines.IP.Address.Here\Test

returned that error, I'm a little stumped

AXXESS

Client for Microsoft networking is on all machines.

I can still ping the XP machine from both ME machines. The XP machine can ping both ME machines. Other than pinging there is no visable connectivity.

Surprisingly Microsoft does not offer much help on their support site on this topic. Must be something overlooked....

On the XP box, in the Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services, Is there a service by the name of Computer Browser? If not, run Network connection wizard again, one it is installed, and running, you should be able to see the network.

If its there, make sure that it is started.

Also, make sure you have NetBios over TCP selected on your XP machine.

AXXESS

Netbios over TCP/IP is now set up. There is no service called computer browser. I tried running the network setup wizard again, and I don't see where adding that service is an option....

Still not seeing each other.... I'm still attempting different settings....

Also...are you sure the hub is working? Cables are all plugged in? You have the right kind of cables (i.e. crossovers or straight LAN cables)? NIC settings are compatible?

AXXESS

I know the hub is working because all three machines can ping each other and all three can access the internet. Cables are the typical LAN cables.

I believe this is just an ME/XP issue and I just need to find the right combination of settings to make them "see" each other on the network...

If you can ping the machines...then try accessing a shared file on one of the other systems, from the command line or a folder's address bar, using the UNC path.

I have a 98/XP Pro network at home, and when I have certain services disabled* the machines won't show up in Network Neighbourhood some of the time, until I actually try to access a folder on the other system using the UNC path. In my case, just going \\Speedkitten\Drivers makes all the other shared folders visible to the 98 machine, too.

(*I have a bunch of hardware profiles which are tweaked for varying degrees of performance and functionality, with many services disabled in most of them.)

98 has shorter character limits for passwords, too, which is a PITA for me 'cause as a paranoid security nut my important passwords are all freaking LONG...I don't know if ME has the same limitation, but it might be something to investigate.

Not quite sure which one to go with, Lorne. Your important password are all "freakin LONG" or all freakin "LONG" ?
... in any case, I think you just gave away your passwords /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Heh, no. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Reminds me of a line at grc.com (http://ww.grc.com/su-fixit.htm):

Ideally they should be LONG random strings of characters. A good one might be something like: "4F3hw9Egh84d2" (But DON'T use that one since it's mine. (Just kidding))

set up an IP adres on the ME computer (ie 10.0.0.149)
set up a subnet mask (ie 255.255.255.0)
do the same for the XP computer (other IP adres, same subnet)
Make shure the harddisks are "shared"

check with the windows explorer the Complete Network
and connect with the WinME machine.
This works fine.

I have 3 computers connected this way to a XP-prof computer.

(some function names can be different, sorry, i'm using the dutch XP-version)

Have you check to see if the XP firewall is turned on? In network properties for the connection to your network device (nic) Check the Advacned tab, make sure Internet Connection Firewall is turned OFFFFF! IF it is on you cannot access the machine over the network at ALLLLL!!

FYI.... ditched my ME machine... picked up a new one with XP... networking is no problem! /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Had the same problem here in my office. 4 Winxp Home (3 desktop and one laptop) and 1 ME. what i did was i wrote a script (.bat which pings the main server running from the ME, somthing REALLY extra) and all the client which runs the ME OS have to do is do a refresh on the networking neighbourhood thing. and voila, there's all your shared folder.

this works for me at least. dunno about you guys out there man.
