All motorcyclists out there:

Many people have a passion for Motorcycles and spend hours cruising the streets and having fun - alone or in groups.

It's surprising to learn, however, that many motorcyclists don't know much about their passion.

Example:
1. A good percentage dont know how to maintain their bikes properly - even simple things like lubricating the chain (they know it needs doing but dont know how!!)

2. It's also shocking to learn how many (motorists in general!!) don't understand the road and how it works.
In the UK, this is known as the "Highway Code" - for which a book is published and goes into what the road markings, signs and signals mean (for the most part, this is aimed at the novice since the 'veteran' is supposed to know this already). But a good percentage don't know what it all means (only some of it) and how the road is color coded etc.

There's just two examples!

A couple of years ago, a video was released called
"Police Advanced Riding Techniques"
As far as i am aware, it is the only one of its kind available. Because of this, there has been interest in it all over the world.

There is discussion for further video's to be made aimed at motorcyclists.
Some things discussed so far include:
1. The road and how it works
2. Motocycle Maintenance
3. Riding the roads in Towns and City's
4. Motorway (interstate) Riding

So whats the question?
As a motorcyclist, what would you like to see on an instruction/tutorial type video
Any thoughts on what would be of interest / help to learn/improve skills etc is welcome.

[Just as a note: I lived in NY for 3.5 years and found the term "Advanced driving" was not used and was unknown. I also discovered that such a thing doesnt exist - at least not in NY
There has been much interest in the video from the USA.

For those unaware, Advanced driving was instegated in the UK by the Police Force and covers such areas as:
improved observation, vanishing points, evasive action, commentary, making the most of the gearbox, using the road correctly, brake/gear overlap .. and so on.

FYI - the video was made by a guy who was a Police motorcycle instuctor for 20 years and has some fine tips in it. If your interested, take a look here www.mikewaite.co.uk (http://www.mikewaite.co.uk)

My suggestion is more about how the entire package is currently being offered.

Have you talked with him about converting his product offering (VHS) to digital and then working to put an AMS project together?

Here in the United States more 'baby boomers' are reaching retirement years every day (Total estimates of that generation is around 70 million folks!).

Guess what a lot of them are doing? Moving to a warm climate and/or buying motorcycles. Those lovely touring kind of bikes.

I would feel personally safer if folks (in general) that ride motorcycles had the basics AND the advanced topics covered!

Good Luck in any event!

ps. I miss riding. My wife says don't even think about buying a bike. (d'oh)

I miss my motorcycle days as well... Spring fever will be hitting me soon and I'll be wishing I had one.

Derek,

Do these motorcycle videos relate well to the US laws? I'm guessing they are Pal and not NTSC as well?

Do these motorcycle videos relate well to the US laws? Some will, some won't. For content such as advanced riding techniques almost anyone can adopt it.
The aim is toward safety always, so next to nothing is given up for safety. The advanced film covers correct road position, vanishing points, dead ground, left and right bends, acute bends, blind summits etc. so the principals behind them can be used anywhere.
For other things like maintenance, the same is true again. Laws would differ tho, so primarily they would be aimed at the UK since that is where they are being produced. Nothing to stop us taking a trip out to NY and covering the laws there tho :) .. watch this space!!
I'm guessing they are Pal and not NTSC as well? Currently yes and only available on VHS. This is being looked into tho and will be available on DVD to the world asap.

Takes me back a bit Derek - I could think of a few additional sections based on my experience.

- How difficult is it to get a brain onto a shovel off tarmac.
- Is a 3"x3" post straight through you likely to kill you or not.
- Can you feel anything when your leg and genitals have just been ripped off by your handlebars.
- Do you have any regrets as a 19 yr old thinking that you'll be in that wheelchair for the rest of your life.
- Put that knife down Mrs XXX , you can't cut your throat just because you'll never see your son again.
- What did you say? Haven't I got anything better to do?

... and despite it all I still loved biking on my Norton Interpol2 ( rotary engine ) bike (http://www.longedge.plus.com/temppics/norton.jpg) a long time ago now.
