It was a surprise when APMS5 crashed when trying to create a new project using the blank template. A few moments into the project, having resized it and about to import a background image when the app crashed.
The Error Reporting feature was also unstable, as several instances of it appeared on screen, and I couldn't complete typing the events that led to the crash. I managed to complete it after several restarts and attempts: The crash can easily be replicated on all attempts
Details of the crash: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005)
Address: 0x3be88
Code Address: 0x3be88
FYI Screen capture attached
If you require anything other information to get to the source of this, including a memory dump, please let me know.
APMS5, however, works fine on existing projects (created some weeks ago using the Beta versions).
Hope this information is of some help in the ongoing development of this remarkable program.

John

Yes, this can be replicated on both machines: new project, resize, choose Image for background, then when click on Browse icon in order to locate image file, APMS5 CRASHES...
This scenario can be replicated on both our main computer and secondary laptop.
No doubt the next release will have picked up on this issue.

John

That is a confirmed bug that will be fixed in the next release. Thank you for reporting it. For now make sure you stretch the background images.

;) I only wish we'd kept all the bloopers over the past few years. There were a few goodies!

Actually I take it back about the problem being fixed. I thought you were referring to a different problem.
The problem that you are having is the one where you click on a browse button to find a file from with one of AMS50's screens and it crashes, right?
OK, I am looking into this one with Mark. I really need to hear from anyone else out there that has this issue. Email me (brett@indigorose.com) if you are experiencing it because I would like you to try some stuff.
Here is what we "know" so far about the problem:
To replicate:
1. Start a new project from a template (use Blank Template first time).
2. Double click on the page background to open the Page Properties dialog.
3. Select image as the background type and then click the little browse button beside the "File:" field.
4. Crash-o-rama.
I would like as many of you as possible to try and replicate this and let me know by email and/or here on the forum.
It seems that the problem does not occur if you open a previously saved project... tell me whay you folks find.
Of course, nobody here at IR can replicate the problem

Brett,
Here are the steps i took to replicate this every time:
1. Start a new project from blank template.
2. Resize the page to anoother pre-set size (no resize = no crash!!)
3. Double click on the page background to open the Page Properties dialog.
4. Select image as the background type and then click the little browse button beside the "File:" field.
5. Choose the image as either "Fit to page" OR "Tile" and click ok
6. Go back to the page properties and choose "Actual size"
7. Crash-o-rama.

Derek,
That is a different crash. We know about that one and have fixed it. This other one has to do with it crashing as soon as you click the browse button.

Doesn't work here. Followed step-by-step and it did not crash.

Same here, no crash. Although it did give me an uneasy glance.

The only possible scenario that may contribute to this issue, is that both my main PC and laptop have partitioned hard disks, with the My Documents being on the second partition (or as is the case with my main system, on a separate hard disk).
It just seems strange that some others are unable to replicate this particular crash.

John

Still does not crash for me, XP Home and 2000. 5.0.0.1

The crash still exists (5.0.0.1) when I click on the little browse icon and the gallery folder opens followed by the APMS5 error reporting utility.
However, I can get past this CRASH if I click and drag a PNG object and insert it as the background, and then resize as necessary. After that, I can work on my project normally.
But if I again click on that little browse icon to locate another background image, CRASH.
When the crash happens, it always opens up to the Gallery folder. I'm wondering whether the problem exists because the Gallery is located at:
C:\Program Files\AutoPlay Media Studio 5.0 Professional\Gallery
and the project is located at:
F:\AutoPlay Media Studio 5.0 Projects\My Project\CD_Root
This should not be a problem, but the program may be looking for something that doesn't exist where it expects it to? Just guessing.
Regards,
John
PS Any reason why the APMS5 error reporting utility sometimes opens up two windows?

I've tried a number of scenarios and the crash can always be replicated when creating a new project (starting with either the blank template or a ready-made one), and wanting to change the background by clicking on the little browse icon.
However, the crash does not occur to a project that I began under the beta version and am still currently developing. (The working folder for this project is on a USB mass storage device U: drive [a 40Gb 2.5" HDD]). In this scenario, I can click on the little browse icon, and immediately the "gallery" folder appears without a problem.

John

I'm looking for a temporary workaround when creating a new project - in order to avoid the CRASH scenario.
To avoid the CRASH (when clicking on the little browse icon in order to choose a background image) I can, using Windows Explorer, simply click-and-drag an image into APMS5, and if bigger than 75% of the project area am given the option of using it as a background.
However, is there a similar "click-and-drag" option for importing the transparent background mask?
See the only way to import this into the project is to click on the little browse icon, and on both our PCs when creating a new project using a template, a CRASH is initiated. (Again, this doesn't occur when working on an already established project from some time ago!)
If there is a workaround here then the browse-cum-crash bug wouldn't be so consequential.

John

John,
I have been in contact with one other customer that is having this same problem. The problem seems to lie somewhere in the process of creating the new project.
Try this:
- Create a new project (from any template)
- Immediately save the project.
- Exit AMS50.
- Restart AMS50
- Open the project saved in step 2.
- The browse buttons should now work.
Please confirm whether this helps or not. The other customer found that as long as they open a project instead of creating one within a session it works fine. Don't ask me why or how this problem exists... I am still trying to track this slippery bugger down... maybe Mark will save us on this one, he's a really good bug killer (in a very vegetarian way, of course) ;)

Many thanks Brett.
I followed your steps for this workaround, and this works!
It's always great when we're able to make progress - as this particular one has been particularly difficult to pin down.
Thanks again.
