Does anyone know if the AIFF sound file format can be played natively in Windows?

I remember WMP 6.4 playing them. I think they can play on even older stuff, i.e. Win95 too but I'm not 100% positive on that...

Just FYI the concencus by email seems to be that Windows 3.1 will not play them but that Win 95 and up will as long as active movie is present. Just more heresay but nonetheless a picture is emerging.

I’ve never ran into any problems playing AIFF files. Like everyone else, I think I’ve been doing it since W95, but can’t say for positive. I don’t have any W95 boxes to test it on. Sorry I can’t be more precise, but my long term memory is sort of shot.

I have a website that uses some AIFF sounds, and I know that they will play correctly in IE4 or better. If my memory serves me, that takes you at least as far back as W98. Sorry I can’t be more precise, but my long term memory is sort of shot. Oops, there goes the short term memory too.

Yeah, here they say IE or NS 3+

It's probably pretty safe if NS 3.0 can run it. :) Like you JImS, I also have a hazy recolllection of all things past and gone but in my mind I seem to remember AIFF being around since like the early 1990s... Pretty sure. :)

P.S. There's two I think, AIFF and AIFF-C (compressed) which came along later.

Thanks guys...

I ran into an issue with WAV files, and was hoping that I could get by with AIFF since it is also playable on a Mac.

Now, off to find a WAV to AIFF converter :D

Any audio editor such as Sound Forge, Cool Edit, etc. will save to .aiff from any format... You can even batch with them. Or there's tons of these sorts of things too http://www.audiomelody.com/FormatConverters/WAV2AIFF.htm

Worm,
You could try DBPowerAmp. Free converter. Go to the codec central to download necessary codecs (ogg, mp3, aiff, wav, wma....).
It's free, does batch, integrates into explorer.

Just because you wanted it, we've put AIFF support into AutoPlay Media Studio 5.0 as a native sound format... Assuming all goes well, it'll be in the Public Beta 3 and the final shipping product.

Just a quick question... Isn't AIFF essentially the same as WAV, just different header info? Inquiring minds...

Basically. It's a Mac native uncompressed audio format - similar to the Windows wav format, but not similar enough...
