    SUMMARY

This article explains the problem where transparent images have "abandoned pixels" in their transparent images.

    DISCUSSION

Sometimes when creating a transparent image the transparent area of the AutoPlay application will have "abandoned pixels". Abandoned pixels are unwanted pixels that appear in certain areas. In this case abandoned pixels are visible pixels that appear in transparent areas, or vice-versa. Generally this will look like blurry edges around your transparent areas.

Here are a few tips on to how to fix this problem:

    • The first thing to do is try saving your image as a Bitmap (*.bmp) or a Portable Network Graphics (*.png) file.
    • Try decreasing the color depth of your image to as low as possible.
    • Only use clean edges in your transparent image, do not use the "Spray can" to draw your edges.
    • When possible use the "Shape" tools instead of drawing with a paintbrush or pencil.
    • Make sure you are using the Windows Palette.
    • Try to avoid using more than two colors.
    • If possible use black and white as your color scheme and decrease your image's color depth so that it is a 1 bit image (i.e. a black and white image).
    • Follow the transparent image creation steps outlined in IR04033 HOWTO: Use Transparent Windows.
