Certificates ?? (Signtool .pfx)(Signcode .spx)

Sorry post I put (spx = should be .spc)

I'm confused : (

I want to start signing my software...
I've spent hours&hours google'n, searching forums, and inputting DOS run commands.

Can anyone give me some incite into Certificates?
Or point me in the right direction of the post or website: "Certificates for Dummies?"

Which is best (pfx/spc), step by step instructions..
I can't believe there isn't a simpler way to sign software. : (
