Hello All,

I just wanted to run an idea past you about a service I would like to create. It's just a concept, however, I think it would be kind of neat.

I play a lot of pc games, and have them installed on two different computers. My problem is that I will have different saved games on my laptop than my desktop. I want a way to keep them in sync. Now I know there is software like this available, but it is for general file/folder syncing to a local drive, etc.

I want to create a service primarily for games that keeps all of your saved games in sync along with other game related addons. (ex. RCT3 custom scenery, new levels, etc.) It would be synced to a remote server so the end user wouldn't have to worry about a place to save them. The application would auto detect your games (or you can add from a catalog of supported games). You could schedule sync times, etc.

After seeing Microsoft's new Azure cloud services, this desktop app could be easily integrated into a web app so you can download your saved data from anywhere.

It's kind of rough around the edges, but I think it would be cool. Even if I was the only one that would use it... I would use it a lot. Do you think it could be worth it?

Lots of software out there that already does this -- a product call APBackup (paid version of Save2FTP) will backup/copy files "as they change" so it can keep your system(s) in sync in "real time"...

In addition, xxcopy can copy "new files" and be run from a scheduler.

Then there's the mirad of "goodsync" (and it's clones/variants) that are free and can do this - and be scheduled to run....

Just my $.02 - I wouldn't think it would be worth the development time.

The difference in my idea is that it is made for games. It's for the standard user that doesn't know where all of the saved games are located for different games and don't have an extra drive or ftp location to save it to.

In my opinion this sounds pretty good, I'm a real gamer and I put new custom material on my games every 5 minutes, An idea to sync that with my laptop is good.

Forget what other people say, Go for it!

Edit:

Try using sside's Watcher dll to look on the save game directories, Then upload them to a FTP server then maybe get the client to look at the FTP server every 5 minutes and download anything new.

Maybe like this.

It sounds like a good idea, but I would think for true portability I'd opt for the latest version on a thumb drive...

I've found SyncBack does all of that. I use it to sych folders, websites, hard drives, anything. I currently use it to synch info from 20 systems in the office, they back up to a big hard drive on the network. I use it to back up our websites to the same drive. I also use it to backup my data on my home system to hard drives at work via a VPN. All of the back up profiles are scheduled.

I do web developement at home and work, its very nice to have all the the development files updated on both systems regardless of which computer i did further development on.

In other words, it would be very easy to create a sync profile to sync a game directory to FTP or another game directory on another connected computer.

Yeah I agree go for it. I've had the same dilemma also, it could help me as well.
