Until the .gif patent is up this summer AMS doesn't support .gif format. But I think you can do that using either a web browser object or a media player object to display your image. Simply create one of these objects and then point it at your .gif.
I am not qualified to divulge that information but just as a layman's guess it would probably seem more likely for 5.0 I would think. Don't take this as official information, I truly have no idea what the plan is, although I know for sure as soon as that patent's up we will be adding .gif support in a timely manner.
gif2swf works pretty good indeed. I myself like to tweek the gif a little. I like to bring the gif into flash and manipulate there. Basicly the same output, but I always add actionscript.
