I'm a trial user, and we're in need of something like this. I went to try it out, but have been having some problems.

I've read the guide and run through the wizard. I select the directory that has my old version, select a key file. Then I add the directory that has the updated version and select the key file. I choose all location methods, and I put the registry info in from hkeylocal machine. When I run the installer, I get different problems, no matter how I set it up.

First, the most common problem is it can't find the path and does not prompt me to select it, even though I chose all options.

Second, when it did find the path, it installed some of the files to my desktop, and the rest in the correct directory.

Third, after a bad patch, the installer won't make another attempt, even though I restore the directory back to the old version. Rebuilding the same patch will give the same message, that my version is up to date, even though it truly isn't.

Does any of this sound familiar? And if so, could someone kindly point me to the thread or resource that explains how to circumvent these types of problems, and perhaps let me know what I'm doing wrong?

VP3 is very powerful, but also more complex that it appears on the surface...

First, the most common problem is it can't find the path and does not prompt me to select it, even though I chose all options.

Can you post your .vp2 file?
Are you dropping the resulting .exe into the same directory as the exe to patch?

Does the .exe file match one of the files w/in you version list in VP?
Is your EXE a "key file"?

Second, when it did find the path, it installed some of the files to my desktop, and the rest in the correct directory.

again; post your .vp2 file -- I suspect you didn't update the file prperties corerctly -- are you doing any lua scripting as well?

Third, after a bad patch, the installer won't make another attempt, even though I restore the directory back to the old version. Rebuilding the same patch will give the same message, that my version is up to date, even though it truly isn't.

Are you restoring all the files? sounds like the key file wasn't restored.
What do you define as a "bad patch"?

It sounds like you used the wizard; but the resulting exe is a little "goofy"

Post your .vp2 file.
