View Full Version : Unable to execute installer/patch file

G'day, everyone. I hope you can help me with a TrueUpdate problem.

My TU3 updater can download my new installer, but says it can't run it.

The error reads:

An error occurred while trying to update ProductName.

Error Details:

Unable to execute installer/patch file.
File execution failed.

I've watched the updater with FileMon (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896642.aspx), but can't see any file operations failing.

If I change directory to C:\Program Files\AppName\Patches, I can run the installer that TrueUpdate just downloaded.

If I download the installer manually, I can also run it.

Any ideas?

Hi garthk,

Is this a TrueUpdate project that you have created? Or is it one that came with a commercial program that you purchased? If it came with a commercial program, please contact the manufacturers regarding this issue.

If it is a TrueUpdate project that you are creating yourself then in order to diagnose the issue you need to supply a few more details.

Please supply the following:


The location where the installer is being downloaded to.
The action that you are using to execute the installer including the value of any variables used.
The contents of the logfile created when you run your update. This can be turned on under Project | Options.


Hopefully that information will provide us with any internal error codes and enough information to see what is occurring.

One thing to check in particular is that it's being started in the correct working directory.
