Custom alternative to explorer?

Hi, I have been approached by my next door neighbour that is opening his own cyber cafe, I have said I will set up all the PC's and stuff, but what he really needs is a sort of "replacement" for explorer.exe so when his customers are using the computers, they cannot access certain stuff to keep the PC's clean and free from tampering..

An example would be a full-screen window than only he can close (maybe with a password he chooses) and also would want to disable CTRL, ALT & Delete so this program and others cannot be closed, also access to stuff like control panel and other system settings are disallowed..

The only things we need to use is Internet explorer (of course) and maybe even some way to just have access to 1 folder where the users can download files to and access it to either burn onto CD or the users own USB drives, and this presents another prob, I have used various library's PC's and I have found that you cant do much to them, but from an explorer window (such as the a:\ drive) it can be possible to type other locations in this address bar (such as c:\) and other locations, we need this to "lock down" the pc so no other use can come from them unless somehow an administrator password is input somewhere, I really dont know where to start, and this would be my biggest project to date, and I really dont wanna let my neighbour down, cos if this all goes ok, it could open up other possibilities for me in the IT industry which is all Ive really ever wanted to do.

Yes I did do a quick few serches, but the problem I have, i can never find the right keywords, such as, if I search for "how to make a login" but it comes up with unrelated search topics, i always have this problem, i know what I want to search for, but i have trouble in wording it so the results will show what I need, its a pain! just like I'm a bit 'number dyslexic' where as I see a section of numbers, but sometimes get them mixed up, I hate it!

And thanks for your reply Casper, in a way, I hate doing jobs for others as they want it done yesterday so to speak and its a pain trying to explain to them that if there is a bit Im not sure about, I have to post in forums to get help, and people are not just here for when I need them, but people dont understand.

I know what you mean about the searches, I had this too long time ago when I had to made many, many scripts and reports from college, it was indeed a pain in the ass to use the right context.

I know there is an example flying around in here from a girl a time ago, try something with the keyword "kiosk" and/or "disable" "browser", sorry can't help you at moment, very busy !

Hi all!

I have added a bit more to this program, the probs I am now facing are:

* I need to disable the CTRL, ALT & Del keys to stop this app being quit by anyone other than the owner.

* For the login details, I guess this will be saved onto the main server, and each PC that is on the network can access this from the server to find the user and load using customers' own username & password, and as this is the case, the list of users & passwords will have to be stored in a text / ini file, and I will need to make some sort of a program up so the owner can then add, edit or remove customers' login details as he wishes, so with 1 app the owner can create a user and it will save it to the server PC, so when a customer goes into the cyber cafe, using any pc (s)he wants, that user will be able to login.

Thanks for all your patience and future help, I have about 2 months to make this program, test and get rid of bugs to make it water-tight for the opening of my neighbours cafe. :)

Hi i would Have a locked up admin accout that uses Exlporer.exe and then on the user account change the reg to change lets call it Cyber.exe on the users
there for no server would be needed to control this.
i would also look in to reg edits for the ctrl alt delete and add this in to a installed or just make a reg and add it.

I use a custom Explorer so i know this works but mine is a mod of Explorer.exe not a AMS work

Yes i don't know how to do that yet but i don't see why it could not get the password and usernames from a text file based on a remote pc or web server.
but i am not sure if its pass cos \\ in ams is \ so i don't know what the comand would be to find it on a remote server unless ams pointed to a short cut that then points to the server.

with alot of work i will see what i can do with this one i am trying :)

and can you provide me with them codes for the key thinks ctrl,alt delete is disabled in this. and so is alt f4

i don't think i can do this but is he going to charge them for a hole day or

Hi! before I go back to work, I have added a bit more, if your gonna test it, please observe the new user & pass, and also I managed to do a sort of timer, at the moment it is only set for 30 seconds to not to bore you when you wait!

A few probs here: in the global functions, there is a bit of code from aomeone (really sorry, Im no good with remembering loads at once) to convert the time into hrs, mins & seconds (hopefully) but I could not get that to work, so I just remarked that bit out, and also on timer expiry, I want all apps opened by the customer to be exited when their session ends, I have a bit of code in place, and have only made it for IE at first, but that dont work either :(

anyways, gotta rush now, will be back later on :)

Rish Feller i have so far done:

Made login work One user only
Admin panel to end software or use taskmge.exe
most keys have been disabled with disablekey.dll

What i need is away that we can edit users via text file on a remote server (\\server or \\ desk )

also edit the time they have left and if the file says 0 then the get a message please buy more time.

i have read all the fourm about more then one user and not been able to work
eveyone that as helped on this so far and in the future will be on the about/ credit page.

So what is needed is:
One text file like so

Admin = popie * (* = Unlimited time)
Mike = home 0:20 ( 20 min)
Jack = open 6:00 ( 6 hours)

-- Locked users --

Hellan = jet + ( + would mean give user a error: Please see admin account disabled)

hey i have done alot of work on your project for you and well
it seems i am going to have to change some of the coding for it
all to work but i will do that soon i think

i have also got the file that can be changed on a remote local server
but i don't know way this would be edited yet so are you able to tell him
to set the desk computer to have the name DESK so i can change the
setting before seeing it to Desk as its set to ****ed at the mo as that the
name of my pc.

Then he or you will need to make a shared in c called Cyber Soft/User Data/Old/Deleted/ <--- This will be the Live data not the dead data just
to try and keep the risk of it been edited by some thats not meant to.

also the admin can now change the admin password it will come preset as yoyo
but this will be changeable

P.S this is only for the new demo what i will send you end of next week
i will make a finished version with installer for cliants and one client admin tool that will install the ini files to the right place and so the admin can change is pass on the desk pc

still working on way to edit the user file and get the timer to work but its preset to 30 mins

So he could simply do it that way for the time bein

still workin on it everyday tho and will have a nice finished product soon.
