Yurx.com, high-quality free hosting. Make some 100 posts on their forums and request the biggest plan:yes

I've been with http://www.fluidhosting.com since maybe 2001 or 2002... before them I switched hosting companies like some people switch socks...
That said, they are not that cheap, but well worth the money with upgrades, service, support, and the uptime is tops. It is not all about money sometimes....
The other company I like that do have cheap plans is http://www.1and1.com . The uptime there is awsome.... but they don't have great tech support. But if you are like me and don't need support but once in a blue moon, then that might be a solution.
I've pointed many people to both companies... more praises come from fluidhosting than 1and1..... Normally support complaints from 1and1 customers....

On Yurx, for enough points, you can request a domain to be registered for you for free, get upgrades, etc.
They also have a paid hosting "company" SodHost.com, I know the owner well and he has made a ton of upgrades to the servers, spent months tweaking them to get extreme performance.:yes

For the same price you get 5GB of space plus 250 GB of transfer at Godaddy.com https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shared.asp?ci=9009

Looks like they have been around for a while... I've never used them so no comment... they also have all the business points (as req) on the contact page, another good sign....
If you want to search the company, the largest and most popular forum to do that would be:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/
Good luck in your search....

Really depends on WHAT you want to do and what type of techs are available at the hosting company.
For example, I hosted at a company that had windows servers, but none of those guys/gals knew anything about windows... it was bad.
The host I'm with now (one I mentioned earlier) has windows and I'm hosted with them... have been since what 2001/02 or so... the servers are rock-solid. Never go down, never any issues with windows hosting. Of course, the technology I use requires windows hosting....
If you want to use something like .net, or asp, then do windows... or if you use Expression web, etc....
Otherwise, it may be cheaper, and better for you to go linux...
Uninformed people who want to spread FUD will tell you that windows is not stable, etc, etc... there are plenty of companies that have trained techs who host reliable and solid windows servers... although, it is harder to find those companies... so the warning is with some merit.
My guess is some will respond with other suggestions and thoughts... but IMO, technology is your main concern... what you want your sites to do, then decide on windows or linux.... if you go windows, pick a company that has a proven track record...
Now, if you want to go "real" cheap... go linux... unless you go with a large company like 1and1... then it will be ok to do windows.... Seems linux is better with small companies done on the cheap (maybe hosted out a basement)... :o don't laugh, this happened to me before I understood this crap....
If you want to get real crazy, you can simply get a reseller account and have both windows and linux available to you.... I think that is my next step as I have a site I want to build that requires linux... it is a ways off, but a reseller account seems to be my best (cheapest) option right now...

I have been a resellar for Interland, now web.com for about 7 years. They finally introduced some economical Linux hosting but most of my sites require PHP and their servers do a good job.

I've been using www.1and1.com since getting a free three-year trial thanks to the lead architect of AMS (Brett). I have not seen any outages and I have not had any Email issues. They have 24/7 voice, Web support. Also, their backend control interface is well laidout.
Price is great too. You get a lot for a little, that's for sure!
