I think what different people consider the 'best' is subject to opinion. Some might think all the graphics and pretty effects make it the best while others might think that the UAC make it the best, and so forth. (See Penn & Teller Bulls**t episode on 'The Best')

In my opinion, XP does everything I need it to do and I have no reason to (personally) use Vista at home. At work, it is part of my job to test Vista with our software so I am required to use it in that sense. I usually end up turning off the fancy graphics anyways, so what's left is XP with more annoying dialogs. :)

I "had" to bring Vista up on a machine to make sure my application worked ok. It does. BUT... my office manager, who won the installation (she was out that day :o ), HATES it. There's also some driver issues. I had to replace a DVD burner that just didn't cut it with Vista. Problems with audio drivers, too.

So... unless you had some compelling reason to switch, I wouldn't. Now NEW machines with Vista are a different kettle of fish... all the drivers will (should) mesh.

Sorta a side note...I was building a mock dell system online today and they are still trying to peddle XP Home....I thought that went by the way side????

After years of resentment towards Billy for Windows ME I think I have finally forgiven him with how great XP has worked on all my machines for years.:D

I have xp pro and vista ultimate in a dual-boot on my main computer... I still use xp since it is already setup perfectly and everything works as I want. With vista I'd have to install several thousand dollars worth of software... not ready to do that until I build a new computer.

Plus, many companies I work with are not as good as IR with software support... I have two companies that have not released updates for vista... one even released an update two days ago, and it still does not support vista. Not a bid deal for me since I was not going to switch over anyway...

Plus, I doubt that I'll switch over until the first service pack for vista is released... I know that sounds cliché, but I'd rather wait until that point.

I have several family members on vista... all love it... no issues. In my dual-boot, I have no issues when I start vista... I did have a sound issue, but going to the manufacture site fixed the issue without a problem.

All of the software I build runs in vista without any issues... well, my database I have to run in administrator mode... but it is an easy fix and my customers don't seem to mind.

If I were getting a new system I'd go with vista... simply because it is new and has very few issue. In addition, if you have some software that does not work in vista, you can always use Microsoft's Virtual PC to run the program in xp... or either dual-boot... virtual pc is a better solution though since you don't have to reboot and all that jazz....

I thought of a good comic strip the other day:

"Software developer Vista psych ward"

Then you could have a bunch of programmer looking people shaking computers and blurting out nonsense. I'd laugh if I saw this somewhere

I will make the switch when a really good computer game only runs with DirectX 10.... Civ 5 perhaps. Until then I will stick with my trusty XPMC edition.

i think that would be the pinnacle factor for me too, im not much of a gamer but i do like a good online shoot-em-up, if/when a game like call of duty or battlefield gets a DX10 release then i will be sure to take the plunge, i was reading some posts in the TGM forum that only a handfull of graphics cards are DX10 compatible, i dont think my old radeon 98 se will cut the mustard so it will mean a new pc for sure........it will have to be some game.......

for mine.. Vista is too hardware hungry, hardcore gamers would be
waiting for Service pack one for this OS and so am I...
Msoft are apparently making attempts to reduce 'loads' on system resources...

UAC and critical system file security together with Os Imaging are good.

For personal use, I don't give a rats about Vista ...

I have Vista mainly for software compatibility design and testing.

Windows XP Pro is my personal choice of Windoz OS at present.

Service pack 3 for WinXP due first half 2008 ...

Longhorn Server Beta 3 is out if anyone interested...

I bought Vista on release day.

IMO, Vista is a great OS, however more of just a sleeker XP. Vista is good only if you have a high end pc. I had 1 gb of ram and an ATI X300 graphics card and it ran ok, but no games. So I uninstalled Vista and am currently using XP. However, I recently upgraded my machine to 2gb ram and an Nvidia Geforce 8600 256mb card with dx10. I am planning on reinstalling Vista here in a few weeks after I get all of my projects transfered to disks and such to put on new pc.

more Vista rambles...had a chat to my OEM suppliers and the word is
if upgrading hardware or getting a machine built, make sure you have
2 gig of ram minimum, a Graphics card that internally supports the
DirectX 10 feature set. One aspect of Service Pack 1 for Vista will
be focused on improved Gaming performance(dx10).

Core 2 or better CPU is reccommended for Vista with all 'eye candy' running.

Intel are apparently releasing a new range of CPU with Vista or later
performance enhancements ...

side note:
Service pack 2 for all things Win2K3 (x86) and 64 bit is out,
personally - a must have for x64 or IA64 OSs - systems -
I am getting much improved performance and stability from x64 WinXP-Pro,
which I am happy to say is up and running again

happy Windozing...:)
