The following is a project settings actions script that I cooked up to handle a more graceful Acrobat check, with user option to install or not install. You will need to have the AcroReader51_ENU_full.exe installer (available from Adobe.com) in order to use this precise script - put that in your Distribution folder for the project. Feel free to modify and share!

The script will check to see if a default PDF viewer is present on the system, and what version that viewer is. If the version pre-dates 5.0.0.0 (of none exists at all), then it will present the option to install the 5.1 version of the software.

This script gives me an endless loop of the original dialog. I included these actions on a text object and when I click on it I just get a dialog that will not disappear (if I click OK or CANCEL). It appears that you have an endless loop

Eric,

I still get stuck in an endless loop as I have an older version of Acrobat installed (4.0....). In this case the cancel button does not let me out.

Yup. Make sure you use the latest version - the first one had a bug. I recommend you paste it into Project Settings -> Actions. Put it in the On Initialize event handler.

This is my version of the script. This script can be used on page initilaization or on a button that is used to open a PDF. If used on a button, there are lines that are disabled that will need to be reenabled as the Opening function. If used on a initialization of a page, I have a variable %PDFCheck% that will be set to failed. You could use this on other buttons so that if %PDFCheck% = "FAILED" you can print an error to the persons screen, and offer to do the install again, or choose to open the file from source on the CD-ROM.

There is one more disabled line that can be enabled if you are using this to open a file from a button. If the user elects not to install acrobat reader, you can enable this line to have the file opened using files from the CD-ROM.

One of the differences between this and Eric's script is that mine uses less go to statements, and more nested IF statements, but the effect is virtually the same.

Sorry to be such a doo-doo head....but, let's say I have a .pdf catalogue on my CD-ROM....would this script be one action and then the next action would be to EXECUTE FILE?

Well, to be really technical, this script consists of a bunch of actions.

Which kind of file do you wish to execute?

The final version of this script checks for a default PDF viewer. If the version of that viewer pre-dates 5.0.0.0, or if there is no PDF viewer installed, it asks if you want to install. It MUST be distributed with the Acrobat Reader installer, and the name of the installer exe must match the name in the script. The AMS program will wait until Reader is done installing, and then it will continue with the next action. I highly recommend that you put this script in the OnInitialize for the Project Settings.

That being said, you can utilize this script anywhere you want, really, and it can certainly be followed by a File.Execute command if you wish.

If you want to open a PDF file after running this script, just use File.Open. File.Execute is reserved for executable files, which, of course, PDF files are not.

In the script that I posted there are some lines that are commented out that can be enabled if you want to use the script for opening a file once you run through the script. Or you can just as easily update the one Eric posted to include an opening script once it is done checking.

Thanks Eric...I believe you answered my question...I am just delivering a .pdf catalogue...so, I copy and pasted your code into an action window and then did FILE:OPEN.

I also placed the newest Acrobat Reader .exe program in my distribution folder...I guess the only way to test is would be to unistall any Acrobat program on one of my computers...

Thanks again for your help last night...I was sort of paniced again...but, got the tedious bulk of the project completed today. Thanks to you! /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Hey, glad to hear it Robert. The script can be pretty easily modified to check for a PowerPoint viewer, MS Word, and a variety of other software too.

The capability to interface so closely with the operating system is one of the main draws for me to AMS.
