View Full Version : Shortcut created in XP has Windows 98 Compatability Mode turned on

I have one user who is installing my app on Windows XP. The SF7.0 installer creates a shortcut for the app on the Desktop.

However, when you go into the shortcut's properties, and switch to the Compatibility tab, it has the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" checkbox checked, and (I think) "Windows 98/Windows ME" selected.

When they then go to run it, it comes up with a message box titled the name of the executable, and saying "Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or greater is required for execution". The program doesn't come up after that.

Several other users have installed on Windows XP without experiencing this problem.

Could this be a bug in SF7, that only occurs on certain versions of Windows XP, or in some certain circumstance? I certainly checked the available Shortcut properties that I am allowed to set in SF7, and this Compatibility Mode setting isn't even among them.

I have a bit more info about this now, after some more corresponence with the user.

It appears that this Compatibility Mode setting in the shortcut's Properties is somehow "sticky". What I mean is this. You can uncheck it, and the problem goes away. But, if you then reinstall the application, which overwrites the program's main EXE and (presumably) recreates the shortcut, the problem (i.e. the Compatibility Mode setting) comes back.

The user ended up having to delete the original shortcut. After doing that, subsequent installs (which recreated the shortcut) caused no problems.

I'm still curious though, whether any known (or unknown!) bug in SF7 or SF6 (which I used before) could have caused this problem to occur in the first place. The user certainly isn't aware of having ever intentionally set that setting by hand, though they admit that some previous user on their computer could possibly have done so.

Thanks.

Dan,

I have never seen any confirmed issue with regard to this setting. Unless you can recreate the issue then there is not much that can be done from our side. It could have been changed in any number of ways and I would assume that it was probably changed by accident in the past.

Sincerely,

Dan,

I would suggest rebuilding the setup package, also if this is only a single users having this issue I would have to suggest its something on there system, I have used SF7 to create many a shortcut and have not seen this issue, if you can repeat it, maybe post a copy of your installer/and its project files for the community to look over.
