View Full Version : Vista Gossip - rumours fact or fiction

Well.. Public 'Beta2' release program looks like April 2006
and for public testing purposes, the release may be called RC0.
looks like Vista may ship with up to 6 versions..with 'Ultimate' being the
release that does it all, so to speak.

That's pretty much what I heard on the DLTV videocast. Some potential aspects of the features-per-version scheme sound a bit unsavory but we'll see how it all gels out...
Eagle

I'm interested in at least one of the 'features': XImage - OS and partition image creation and restore functionality.

For all the things which may not go right a lot of stuff will go well, and I'm sure there's tons of new features which we will like once we have a chance to get used to them. I'm a big fan of Windows, although not always necessarily of the way MS delivers products. ;)

Scenario: Joe the 'OEM' installs say Vista Lite". to a new client box
there you are client..she's good to go.
Client does an anytime upgrade..what is the OEM, who supplied warranty
and tech support based on the delivery condition, the system plays up,
who it obligated to provide support and for what ?

Indeed. :)

Well.. for enterprise customers(VLK) RTM due for November 2006
for non VLK - retail consumers - first quarter 2007 folks.
further security enhancements and IE 7 tweaks - security tightening
amoungst the official release 'delay reasons', in theory a good thing ...
RC0 (pub beta 2) -may be delayed accordingly
Corey
03-24-2006, 11:00 PM
I read MS office won't be out until 2007. In your opinion do you think enterprises will upgrade prior to that?
Eagle
03-24-2006, 11:10 PM
Good question Corey, history shows corporate customers were slow to deploy
upgrade to XP from NT4 or from Win 2000, however locally at least, there is a definate buzz about deployment of 'Vista Ultimate Edition'. As for Office 2007, the thinking is Deploy Vista - Longorn then 'worry' 'bout Office 2007.
FWIW ...
Corey
03-24-2006, 11:49 PM
Yes, arguably this is the most overdue version of Windows ever. So people who were slow in the past may not be this time. That being said, the delay on MS Office will certainly make it tempting to hesitate. :)
I think it's a marketing mistake for them if they release an enterprise version of Vista until they have the new version of Office ready. Meanwhile I intended to have the video training (which I'm now finishing off) ready in time for the AMS version 6.0 release, so I can certain understand how easy it is for these things to become delayed anyhow... :o

Even though the VLK may be available Nov 2006, reality can be actual
deployment (hardware considerations especially) regarding Vista Client -
Server could take several months for an enterprise to be goodtogo as it were.
By then Office 2007 vlk or retail should be available for Deploy.
(that's if businesses etc want to spend the bucks on the new UI and training etc)
Corey
03-25-2006, 12:20 AM
Yeah. Looks like 2007 before it's off the ground in a significant way. That's a bit disappointing for me, but then again XP is doing what I need it to do, so... :)

by then you'll be ready for some new fancy 'wheels' for ya skateboard too,
looks like a decent RC for Vista won't be publically avail.. til August 2006.
boo hoo, role around on floor in 'tantrum mode' :lol
(there are many local businesses - end users who are still running on PIII's
or equivelent - are well another boost for the industry as a whole, I spose)

Hee. :)
The retail industry is screaming at MS because they wanted vista for Christmas. They are literally freaking out. Some firms gambled big on a Christmas release, and now they're left holding the bag. Supposedly a lot of large enterprises do the bulk of their IT spending in January and February, so that's maybe the mark MS is looking at.
As for wheels I've been rolling strictly shop (generic) since I started skating but this year I'm going to try some more expensive ones and see if there's any difference. The sound of me ollying with my new wheels - > [roll, roll, roll] SNICK!!! [pause] MACK!!! [roll, roll, roll]
This summer is going to be the best summer EVER! :yes

Well the OEM releases only will now be available Nov. 2006,
MS has seen the light, retail from the stores- still Jan-Feb 2007,
however if you build a new box or do an upgrade Nov 2006 onwards,
just ask for the 'oem dvd' from your hardware supplier at the time.
- cheaper and you are entitled to it. - most countries ;)

Office 2007 beta 2 program - try it out now if interested.

sidenote: XP Service Pack 3 is in the pipeline, will have a few of vista's security tweaks , IE related mostly

Well, a few quick tests of a SUF70 installer and the AMS60 created App,
have shown that as they are, the runtimes function OK.
With the AMS60 App - window width and size is a bit off with regard to
object positioning on Vista Beta 2, apart from that pretty darn good,
web object and test connection functionality etc work as expected
on Vista's IE7+

Thats' what yas get when yas gamble. It's not MS fault as I knew Vista wouldn't be out until 2007 many months ago. If I knew, they should have. A bad gamble indeed. But the fault lays within. ;-)

Does this all mean that apps built on AMS can run and write on VISTA as they usually do on XP?

so far ..I have not had issues with read\write\execute etc
for builds, when tested on Vista B2, keeping in mind info in above links.
I for one am in the throws of installing Release Candidate 1, which by all accounts
will be close enough to RTM to be reliable for Application Devs.

Well Vista RC1 installed at this end,is a vast improvement on Beta2,
as with B2, RC1 has "UAC" turned ON by install default.
Tip: for those that want to know what the insides of each version of Vista
is for App Dev, here's a documented way to install a version of RC1 by
purposefully not entering a 'product key' when requested during install of the
burnt to DVD RC1 ISO.
by doing this and ignoring the warning, you are offerred which version of Vista to install,
the installed version is only good for 14 days(instead of the if activated, to June 2007),
then its a clean install to the partition and start again. I have not tried this 'trick'
Hav'nt retested any Apps as yet...due to existing virtualisation in Vista
and improved app compatibily with RC1, there really should not be general
functionality issues when testing IR(yet to openly support Vista) built Apps.
on this latest public release of Vista Ultimate.

It hasn't been talked about here so I thought I would bring it up. Microsoft just modified the Vista EULA. It appears that we will be able to install to another device and I quote "You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices." I do not know about you but this may cause some issues because I work with 2 or sometime 3 pc's (1 being a laptop) most of the time. Buying a ligit license could get very expensive at $399.00 a pop.
This is much better than the original EULA which I believe stated that a person would have to pruchase or pay for a full version for each and every installation of Vista weather it was a re-install due to failure or purchase a new pc and so on. I guess we will have to see if they make additional changes prior to public release.
One other thing I have RC1 installed on a VMWARE session and its a bear. Took a minimum of 8.5 gigs of hard drive allocation just to get the install to work. Total space used was 6.5 gigs when finished. Need at least 500megs ram just to do basic stuff. I have 2 gigs so that was not an issue. Looks good but I think I will be waiting for a while till I make the leap to Vista.

I am probably not going to even sell Vista ladened machines for at least a month or two after release. But, I'll have to get a copy so I can try it out.

confirmed file version info for Windows Vista: Release To Manufacture
- Long Build: 6000.16386.061101-2205(RTM)
system file version info for RTM:
an easy one to target is the NT Layer - kernal file:
_SystemFolder.."\\NTDLL.DLL"
a file version info action on the above binary will return this:
6.0.6000.16386
This is an easy way to confirm an App is running on Vista RTM
(anything less than: 6000.16386 is a Beta or an RC release)
