Sorry to change the subject, but that brings up a wonderful musical trivia question. In the song Mellow Yellow, whose voice is it that says “quite right slick”?

Hmmm, that's interesting. I don't know much about Donovan so I'm going to guess one of the Beatles?

Excellent guess Corey! :) Yes, it is Sir Paul McCartney singing/speaking the phrase. It’s a fact that I only learned a couple of years ago whilst leafing through a book about Top 40 Hits I have.

That’s a really good power of deduction, on that one Corey. Good one :yes

I was going to guess McCartney simply because it sounds like him, he has a very specific voice and manner of elocution. But then as I started to type his name I thought it might be Lennon intentionally trying to sound like McCartney, because he had a knack for doing that when he wanted to, and it would go to figure that Donovan loved them both. Either way it's possible that I may have heard about this long ago, being such a fan of rock music, and merely had it stored somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind...

Seems to me I may have seen an "E! True Hollywood Story" or some similar type segment on Donovan many years ago now that I think about it. Cool post Jim, thanks. :) :yes

You know who really impressed me in that same sort of vein? Nick Drake. Tragic story, but he left behind some great recordings. I was just learning Pink Moon last week and it's one heck of a tune. I got into Drake's music a couple years ago, he has tons of excellent songs, a definite "must hear" for anyone who likes eclectic folk rock. :yes

P.S. I just read a little blurb on Donovan. I never realized he was from Scotland. I always thought he was Irish. I'm also amazed at how many movies his daughter starred in:

It seems like it would be impossible to do five movies in one year, i.e. 1992. If she's any good in those movies then that's pretty impressive. I also like how she did Stern twice in '99 and then never went back, gee I wonder why? :yes

Cool info about Donavan’s daughter, I didn’t know that. I am a fan of some of Donavan’s music. I enjoy much of the whole the flower child experience in music.
Thanks for the tip on Nick Drake, I’ll have to check him out sometime. :yes

You won't regret it. Check out Pink Moon and Northern Sky, those are very indicative of Drake's sound. You've probably heard Pink Moon before. Drake has a very haunting, textured sound. Great stuff, a truly exceptional talent in my eyes. Drake's is amongst some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard, and all his songs are good, which is a rare accomplishment.

Elsewhere in rock trivia, I saw an old video this week of the Dinah Shore TV show featuring, of all people, Iggy Pop. And during his peak period of wierdness too. Surreal. Guess who was playing keyboards for him on that entire tour? David Bowie. I never knew any of that, and I also didn't know that Iggy Pop had released "China Girl" many years before Bowie... :yes
