I'm creating an a/v heavy interactive CD using Flash exclusively, which will have quite a bit of dynamic content (XML).

- I am wanting the ability to have the user be able to click an "update" button that will pull the latest XML file (and related files) from my web server to the users hard drive - where the app will have been installed. Some of the related files will be audio and video, so the size could be quite large. It would be recommended toward broadband only, obviously. I have looked at TrueUpdate/VisualPatch, and they both look promising, but I'm not sure if either work with this type of installation (since it's just putting the files on the users hard drive, rather than using .dlls and such). Has anyone had experience doing this, or any other updating software? Any advice on how I should go about the updating issue?

TrueUpdate and Visual Patch would be a great way to accomplish this task. TrueUpdate would be responsible to see if there is a newer version of the files available than the ones currently on the user's system. Then if a patch is needed you could download a patch created with Visual Patch and run the patch to update the files. Visual Patch 2.0 is currently in development and should be in public beta soon. VP20 allows the cration of binary difference files which can dramatically reduce the bandwidth needed to download updates to large files.

Thank you. So TrueUpdate would work in tandum with VisualPatch? Is there a discount for ordering both :D ?

My installer "install" only .xml, .flv, mp3, .exe, and .swf files - all of which make up my Interactive CD. I say "install", but it merely places all of the files on the user's computer (so it runs optimally). It doesn't place a .reg file or .dll on their system. Will it still work fine?

The updated files would be any of the following:
.xml, .flv, .exe, .swf, .mp3

The VisualPatch sounds absolutely perfect if it is able to update those files with no problem. :yes

anyone? Has anyone used either of these products with a flash-created .exe?

Visual Patch and TrueUpdate can update any type of file. You will have not troubles getting it to patch those file types.
