I just bought a I/O MAGIC External USB 2.0 DVD+/-RW/+-R (Dual Layer).

Now I will not have to play the "swap the customer's CD/DVD-ROM out because it wont boot media because it's malfunctioning, so I have to put in a new one I have laying around" game any more! (as long as the system has a working USB port).

Under a hundred bucks and no rebates... boy are the prices dropping (must be because of the next generation of DVD burners on the way).

Don't you have to make sure that the motherboard can boot from USB?

Now look see here part'mer... *tipping 10-gallon forward, every so slightly*... I'a finna'getta 'round yonder onto that, wait, pray-tell, that there be one of the city'slicker "just joshin" ya deals.

Well, I'm'a (the worst speller in this post, lmao) gonna' do what I gotta do... to get this little buggy' rolling.

Excuse me, time to sattleup.

Seriously, here is a link to M.S. that talks a tad on the topic:

You're on the right track there...

Weird, I feel like watching Blues Brothers for some odd reason *Elongated snort laugh that has the entire supermarket check-out isle turning to see who's doing such*

I just purchased a Plextor PX-716UF DVD DVD±R/RW external IEEE 1394 and Hi-Speed USB drive a couple of weeks ago to use with a Fujitsu Stylistic ST5020 Tablet PC. It's an awesome drive. I've since used it with a bunch of different systems, and the performance is incredible. The fact that it works with USB 2.0 and Firewire is a huge bonus.

That PC Tablet is pretty swank'ed!

The Plextor is not cheap (that's like 2.5 times more than this one I bought) but, it does have 2x faster dual layer burn and Firewire.

Someday I'll be able to afford a Plextor, and then I'll look back on it all and think, "Yep..." :yes

Plextor stuff is awesome. That's a killer combo for sure...

While it's true that the Plextor drives are relatively more expensive, I have to say that it's the first DVD burner I've had that works flawlessly with everything I've thrown at it. I would have expected an external drive to work less reliably and slower than an internal drive, but I was completely wrong.

We recently had a need to write out a disc that had a couple hundred thousand small files on it. I tried burning that disc on drives by LG, Liteon and Pioneer. I was getting pretty frustrated, as they were all creating coasters. Anyhow, the Plextor did the job flawlessly the first time.

To be fair, all the other drives work pretty well for regular day-to-day burning jobs. But when nothing else would work, the Plextor came through. *And it was blazing fast!* :) :yes

Wasn't Plextor the first commercially to offer "under-burn protection" too?

I have noticed that a lot of people who are into premium gear buy Plextor. Figured there was a good reason. :)
